Welcome back Wat, we missed you. Your posts are lacking details of the guttering project at Tyler Towers. Was expenditure capitalised or was it off balance sheet (i.e. cash job)?
Macroeconomics crisis here at Acorn Acres. Polish plumber - guttering specialist - says he is off back to Poland because there is a shortage of plumbers there. And, he is now only getting four and a bit Zloty for a pound he sends home; he was getting seven when he got here in 2004.
Back to subject. The DWP manages its processes to a weekly time frame. The HMRC works on a minimum of a one year time frame. Now, which one would you use to handle a benefit like the tax credit system. The recipients of which live their fragile lives on a weekly basis?
Rename the DWP to Dept of Welfare and Pensions. Make it the only department of government that handles state benefits of any kind.
And they say that police and teachers' pay rises are unaffordable. Hmmmm.

Getting 1 million off benefit and into work is an interesting assertion as it will avoid having to deal with these problems, incapacity benefit being a different benefit all together and if I understand the law correctly it is very difficult to remove income support because that's a benefit targeted at those either not entitled to other benefits or who simply need the minimum income level the govt have to provide to support life. Income support typically being claimed by carers, lone parents or those with ill health not entitled to incapacity benefit.
One other point of major importance is the way the DWP lump fraud and error in together, when you drill down into more specific figures fraud is much less of a problem than over payment, and of course over payment is to do with the DWP rather than individuals.
None of this is readily understandable unless you have enough understanding of the benefits system to realise their constant drive to deal with 'fraud' is a huge cover for not dealing with the real problems, inconsistency, over complication and error.
