I feel a close bond. I too was listening to the Commissar trying to explain himself to Humphreys. I was...excruciating. Mrs Crippen's sister, a maths teacher and normally of a gentle disposition, has already sent me an email which I would hesitate to send to the Devil's Kitchen never mind publishing it on family sites like BoM or NHS BLOG DOCTOR.

But Wat, "Kultur". Spelling, dear boy, spelling. It's "Kulture".

I will add it to my weekly list of spellings I MUST learn.

Except of course I was using the word as defined in the jolly old Oxford Dictionary:

"kultur (kooltoor) n. (esp derog.) Civilization as conceived by the Germans (with implication of racial arrogance and militarism)"

Not that arrogance and militarism has ever had any role in NuLabour.

But Wat, it seems you were right. I too have been researching:

Das Wort Kultur kommt aus dem Lateinischen. Das lateinische Wort Cultura bedeutet Landwirtschaft, Feldbestellung, bebautes Land (zurückgehend auf das Verb colere, colo, colui, cultus - pflegen, anbauen) - als Gegensatz zu Natur - und so wurde das Wort Kultur bis ins 19. Jahrhundert verwendet, während für die heutige Bedeutung des Begriffes Kultur mehrheitlich das Wort Kunst seine Anwendung findet!

Are we to assume that this government is becoming more Nazi than Stalinist? An interesting thought. Acually, I think we may both be wrong about Stalinism. I think Mr Burnham's activity is more Maoist than Stalinist.

Should we both change the habits of a lifetime (I can remember discussing that nice Mr De Maniac with you) and switch to Radio 3 in the mornings? That would have the benefit of forming part of our five portions of vegetables. Or kulture. Or kultur
