Incidentally we already have an "independant regulatory body" - its called the electorate, and in extreme cases its wishes can be expidited by an "criminal arbitration service" I foundly dub "the police".
I get very nervous when there are calls for "independant" bodies; there is never a call for more accountability to those that pay their wages, only a deferment of powers to other unaccountable bods who will tend towards corruption as easily as any public funded body does.
I have a lot of respect for Unity and his ideas, but they should be taken with a great big pinch of salt; it would be particularly telling if they were to support constitutional reform enabling citizens with the right to recall an MP or civil servant or stand under judgement from a system with a democratically elected leader (judges, police, health services etc). You wouldn't need a separate body with these innovations, just enough concerned citizenry to ensure justice.

Before I get calls about police not being accountable. Yes indeed, but then they should be and notice how those who extol the idea of localism always seem to skirt outright democratically viable schemes of recall and election of individuals to arbitrate the law; the reason is that they are more interested in their version of the law, and less about justice; we would do well to remember the difference when we next get to vote - Bastiat indicates this very saliant point in much of his work.

It seems to me that the "independent body" will be independent of the electorate, and dependent on the Government. Rest assured that only MPs who upset the government whips will ever be prosecuted, never mind jailed. As a means of ensuring even more power is concentrated into the hands of the PM its a good idea- presuming that's what's wanted. I wonder how Labour will like this power being used by a Conservative Prime Minister?
"Laziness born of financial comfort" is eco-friendly. Industry born of poverty is destroying the planet. I wish everyone was as rich and idle as possible. Time awake, frankly, is time wasted.
