While annoyed by McCain as much as most conservatives his problem isn't that he's all things to all people. It's that his stance on a few important issues (illegal immigration and campaign speech) are so diametric to the base. On the Iraq War he's been firm in urging victory even pushing for the surge when it was politically risky. There's also McCain's bad habit of being tougher on Republicans than Democrats.

Yeah, but the problem with Obama isn't that he's black, it's that he's red. In comparison, McCain looks pretty good.
Besides, the demographics are on our side. All we have to do is not lose and we'll win.

Get drunk and vote is right! McCain couldn't make it any harder to vote for him.

I see your point, but since taking a drubbing on the immigration issue last year, McCain has been trying to appease both sides. He says to conservatives that he "learned his lesson" but then promises to fight for immigration reform when speaking to immigrant activist groups.

I agree about the demographics. Obama's two core constituencies appear to be African-Americans and white liberal intellectuals (the Dukakis coalition) and they alone won't be enough to put him over the top.
Some of the latest polls and election projections do have me worried, though. And then there is always the fickle nature of the American electorate.
