There's a newish book at our library called the Great Betrayal, about the Gilded Age, and the author strains mightily to make parallels with today. Whatever. It's still an interesting review of the era if you can get past the author's bias. I got about 2/3 of the way before returning it to the library.

Would the writer, or the readers, be able to stand by the notion that the repulican party is the same as it was back in the times mentioned in this text? I am aware of the republican party's history, as are you, but I do see a difference in the republicans of those times, and the republicans today.

Damn right I would stand by that notion. Anyone who truly believes in legal equality of the races would be appalled by the racial spoils system (i.e. affirmative action) that exists these days.
