I know this isn't why Ruskell drafted Schmitt, but in the back of my mind, I can't help but think about the draft grades he'll get five years from now. As a 7th round pick, and a likely multi-year starter, Schmitt will make this draft look pretty good!
Erik - Tyler Schmitt was a 6th round pick. Regardless, I agree with you - it's great to get a guy that will start that late in the draft.
With all the trouble we've had with our long snapper since we released J.P. Darche, this was a very good pickup. It was also a factor mentioned by Josh Brown as he ditched the Seahawks for the Rams. He was upset at the instability of the long snapper/holder combination. As good as Schmitt is reputed to be, Brown might rue that decision in the next decade with the Seahawks probably having one of the best combinations of snapper/holder in the league.
Of course Brown wanted to go to a winner too. What a dufus!
Speaking of Brown, Coutu sounds like a kicker that is much like Brown was when we drafted him in having a strong leg with excellent accuracy and is said to be cool under pressure. That combination of kicker/long snapper coming out of this one draft has the very real possibility of putting our kicking game in a real stable position for the next decade. That could make this draft memorable for years to come regardless of who else proves up.
