What is the difference between upload/downloading and "Hot Linking"?

Todd - If you download the image to your computer, and upload it to your own webhost or image host, that means you are handling/paying for the bandwidth involved if you were to post that image to your website or a message board.

If you simply copy 'n' paste the link I'm using for my own site (i.e. progressiveruin.com/picdirectory/coolpicture.jpg) into your website or message board, that means I'm footing the bill for the bandwidth involved in providing image hosting for you. That's considered bad form, and could result in problems if the image owner discovers the hotlinking and changes the picture to something obscene or embarrassing.

Ah. Okay. Thanks for the info Mikester. That really does clarify things for me. And sorry if I have ever hot linked anything of yours in the past.
As I said before, I'm really not very computer protocol literate. So any slights I may have wrought to anyone across the vastness of the internet is merely me being an idiot and not intended as a big "screw you" to anyone (yourself included).
