Oh, I'm thinkin' about it. Oh yes. I'm thinkin' Brolin burned me pretty bad with that lousy Amityville flick... but admitedly that didn't have THE CAR in it.

As far as I can tell? Sam & Max always go there.

You mention the all-star cast of "The Shadow" and leave out Tim Curry as a mildly evil scientist? IIRC a giant ball crushes him...

You know what would make a "good" Saturday movie night? Baldwin in "The Shadow" and Billy Zane in "The Phantom"...

Is there an online retailer selling the Sam & Max DVD? If only there were any easy way to find such a business...

James Brolin. THE CAR.

Cinematic masterpiece.

Damn you and your Billy Zane in The Phantom.

But throw in a Dark Man (just one) and you've got a deal...

I wanted to like that Shadow movie so much, but the script was just putrid, with the Mon in Block cracking jokes Ahnold would have rejected.

Still, it was a nice looking movie, and the cast was top notch except for the mugging of Curry...

Another very good thing about "The Shadow" is Penelope Ann Miller in period clothing. Strangely, I don't remember anything she says other than the scene when she's recounting her dream on the beach, though.

I also reviewed the Sam & Max DVD someplace else, and provided a useful numbered list of things you'll need to say while you're watching the DVD. Already a leading contender for best DVD boxed set of the year. Also got to chat with Purcell via e-mail about the show, where he reveals the strangest thing Broadcast Standards & Practices asked him to do.

Wow, guys. I'm almost positive Mike asked for no spoilers.

Is that the were-car from Futurama?

I saw The Shadow in theatres and remember being less than thrilled, but then I was comapring it to the Helfer/Baker series that I couldn't get enough of. Haven't seen it since.

The Shadow is worth another look - I find I enjoyed it the second time I watched it. It isn't perfect, but like most comic movies, if you can shelve your pre-conceptions and just take the movie as it is, it isn't half-bad. Ditto for the Phantom. Not so much for Darkman - which was just bad.

I'm currently watching Constantine for the first time - I deliberately watched it before I started reading the series (I know, I've got over 100 issues to read) and have been enjoying it....

brolin and bladwin in one fell swoop. dang! what a post mike!

NEELIX YES.

Damn you! Now I have to rent BOTH the Shadow & The Car (I saw the Car in the theater and it was awesome & terrible)

The Shadow is the type of flick best watched when you really have developed no pre-concieved notion of the character.
*
In my case, I listened to the Shadow radio shows on tape (MP What?) in High School, read the Chaykin Shadow run when it first came out ( you, know where he was packing the mac-10's) and the series as picked up by Helfer/Baker (which may have gone of the rails a bit toward the end). I also read and liked Mike Kaluta's "Hitler's Astrologer" graphic novel (which came out around then and was set in the original pulp time period).
**
Anyway - Shadow cred established - I remember just not liking the movie because it just was not as dark/serious as I was expecting. Part of the problem was compounded by the fact Hollywood did not make as many big budget comic book movies in my young adulthood, so I probably set myself up for disappointment in expecting something to be better than it possibly could be.
***
When I saw Darkman, I didn't have any pre-conceptions and it was out of the blue a cool comic book type movie(which again, was not that prevelent back in the dark ages), so I was sort of "this is great." I kind of felt the same way about the Rocketeer, because I had not read the comic at all, so it really was "new."
****
Of course, I also remember renting The Return of Captain Invincible and being "wow, this is fantastic", and my friends thinking I really needed some type of psychiatric interention, so what the hell to I know.

"You've dismissed me dryly for the last time, Mr. Vulcan!"

I saw The Shadow in the theater. It was quite as awesome as I wanted it to be, but I remember finding it pretty entertaining all the same.

Don't forget to buy some Blue Coal!

Listening to old Shadow serials?
Man, and I thought I was old-school.
I tip my hat to you (which is a nice one at that, Detroit Red Wings)

I agree, full frame is poopy.

I rented El Topo from Netflix and it was full screen! You can't even get a frickin' art house movie in widescreen? At least it will be a treat to see it again one day in all it's splendor...

THE SHADOW, seen again recently on TV, is definitely one of my favorite superhero films even though it was recently named the Worst Ever in some poll! I don't get that. Cool music, some great sets, great scenes and it doesn't take itself too seriously! Of course, I thought THE PHANTOM was enjoyable for all the same reasons!Still, having seen everything from the FLASH GORDON serials to the Fleischer SUPERMAN cartoons, Japanese, Turkish, Indian superhero films, INFRA-MAN, TOXIC AVENGER, MAN-THING, BATMAN AND ROBIN, SUPERMAN RETURNS, BUCKAROO BANZAI and yes, DARKMAN, I like to think I DO have some expertise in this area, y'know?

Oh dear boredlawyer... The Return of Captain Invincible... oh dear... That movie confused me. I just couldn't get my head around the fact that it was a supehero parody and yet... it stank.
