I agree, 'Mazing Man continues to be one of those comics I pull out every few years and reread, because it's so darn unique and genuinely fun. It's easy to understand why it wasn't a best-seller, but not easy to understand why it didn't have enough appeal to keep going as one of those consistent second-tier books. I also love the Ambush Bug books from the same period, more slapstick, but so darn entertaining.

I know it's probably pretty obnoxious to keep throwing up links like this, but in this case I think it seems appropriate.

Last year I wrote two posts detailing the contents of the first issue of my favourite childhood comic:

Part One:

Part Two:

Please ignore my promises of future updates, as--once again--my ambitions proved far larger than my abilities.

Hey, I still like to hear the Bangle's Walk Like An Egyptian now and then. A good solid peppy pop classic.

It was before its time for me. I never even saw an issue (comic book store only when I was still stuck in newsstand land maybe?), but I don't know that I would have picked it up.

Today though...

I remember MTV practically being the all-Batman-all-the-time network in the summer of 1989, but if they did a single story about the comics (as opposed to the movie) I know that I never saw it.

Is that the same Doug Herzog who canceled MST3K?

'Mazing Man even got a one-pager in Secret Origins as well as a cover spot.

Yes, this is the same man who received, if the stories are to be believed, more than a few letters addressed to "Doug 'Dickweed' Herzog" when he pulled the plug on MST3K at Comedy Central.

I bought every Issue of 'Mazing Man.

Great series. Fun. Fun. Fun.

The Abominable Showman! I HAVE THAT RECORD. Harry The Hat Is Where It's At! Draco The Drake!

YOU CAN'T MAGIC LOVE LIKE THAT AWAY, MYFISTOH!

The flea market where I bought it isn't there anymore. Damaged in a bombing, the whole building was renovated and turned into upscale "units," selling expensive shit to people with more money than sense. BOO. BOO, I say.

//Oo/\

I have a vague recollection of 'Mazing Man as a character, but I don't think I ever bought a book or read one. It looks like something I'd love to read now, though. As for MTV in the 80's, I lived in a rural area that didn't have cable, so I only got to see it when I went to friend's houses, so I remember next to nothing about it.

'Mazing Man was a little slice of unexpected greatness. Had it been creator-owned, I'd be negotiating for the Complete 'MM reprint book series even now (making sure to include not only the Secret Origins story, but also the Sunday newspaper-style one-pager than ran as an ad in CBG... I wonder if I still have my copy somewhere?)

I suspect 'Mazing Man was insufficiently "gritty" for my tastes back then. However, now, seeing that grinning Frank Miller Dark Knight delights me to no end.

I remember seeing the ad for 'Mazing Man in an Ambush Bug comic (or some other from that time frame) but never being able to find an issue.

I didn't hve access to comic book stores at the time, of course. Waldenbooks, and that was about it.
