Coelecanths rule! |
|
I suspect Warner Brothers comics suffer as Warner Brothers cartoon characters generally do in the marketplace, from a lack of love from the company that owned the rights. Disney, for all its corporate sins, is famously concerned with how Disney characters are represented in the market. It is a pain for Slave Labor Graphic to do comics on even their very secondary titles as Disney is such a control freak company. Warner Brothers on the other hand is famous for handing out their characters to anyone who waves a five dollar bill at them. The Warner characters are in countless run down theme parks and have been in crappy ads for all kinds of products for years. Disney's hypercontrol has given them some very bland and flavorless products over the years, but their comics have normally been very good. Warner Brothers sold the comics rights to folks who wanted to make a quick buck. It is no surprise to me that one holds it value better than the other. I love the original Warner cartoons much more than I love the old Disney cartoons, but in comics I buy Disney. |

Coelacanths are tasty critters, Mike. Good choice for a tattoo! |

But were any of those books embossed with outer space designs? That what people want to know man! |

MAD 210 appears to feature a Lord of the Rings musical which is an even better gag in light of the actual Lord of the Rings musical that is running (or ran) in London: |

Also, there are no above-the-marquee "genius" names associated with Warner Bros' cartoon comics. Disney has Barks, Gottfriedson, Rosa (more recent, but still a draw). Warner Bros has... um, anyone? At all? Barks drove the market for Duck comics for decade - still does. Most of the people who have ever worked on the WB properties were, well, pretty darn bland in their aesthetic, from what I've seen of the Gold Key / Whitman era books. |

"decade" - "decades" |

I had the experience of a guy showing up at the comic shop I worked at looking for tatoo art. I think he was looking for Yosemite Sam. |

Tim - That's something I'd actually brought up in the initial draft of that post...there was no "Good Rabbit Artist" on the Bugs Bunny books, for example. Or, you know, maybe there was...maybe some Warner Bros. collectors are really into the work of one particular artist on those books. I have no idea. But even if there is, it hasn't filtered into general collectors' awareness. |
