I hate it when dark skinned black people try to wear blonde. It never looks right, no matter who it is (Lil Kim, Mary, Puffy's mom). And before anyone gets upset, I'm black so I can say that 
I'm white and I think it's wrong too. It's as bad as when white people try to get dreadlocks or cornrows. It just looks stupid and fake, and actually worse than Mary J. here.
Mary J's signature look is the blonde look. But I also think Gwen Stefanie and Christina Aguillera look a hot mess with the white blonde hair too. Even some white people don't look good with blonde hair.

And no, FeFe it has nothing to do with 'white trying to be black vs black trying to be white'. If something doesn't look good, it doesn't look good. I've seen some white girls with braids and it looks pretty. They're not saying "hey I want to be black...I know, I'll get braids"...they like the braids. It's called a style. And my point was based on her skinned complexion, I personally felt that it does not look good on her. I'm light skinned, and there are shades that would look horrid on me but perfect on someone darker, and vice versa. That's all it is. What looks good vs what doesn't look good.

A darker 'honey' shade (like the colour at her roots) would be more complimentary to her skin tone. She's still sorta rockin' this shade tho. Maybe it's combo of hairstyle and color that's off?

most of the time blonde hair doesnt work on black people because it just doesnt look right. a lot of the time dyed blonde looks pretty bad on extremely pale, naturally red haired people as well (lohan) people with tan/olive complexions usually dont pull of red. and practically no one can dye their hair jet black and have it look ideal. yeah, sometimes it works (eve does look cute platimun) but usually its best to keep your hair somewhat close to natural looking.
Mary can rock that shit forever! Blonde fits her personality.

Anyway, I think people get confused between discussing skin color as far as appearance and skin color as race.
When people get their hair colored by professionals, the stylists use the skin color as part of the palette and take in consideration how your skin color is complemented with a particular shade. Same as choosing clothes that complements your shade. Some black people would look great with the shade MJBlige is wearing. I think she looks a little old. When it was slightly redder it softened her face more. Also, the style, to me, seemes to matronly for her. Like someone said, she looks like a secretary from 1987. But she's Mary J. Blige! She should look fierce!
I don't think that blacks should NEVER wear blonde hair, they should just make sure it works with their particular skin tone. Also, I think short blonde afros are cute on SOME.
I guess not only is it the color, it's the style and ability to work it.
For instance, I think the William's sisters aren't really working their look. They'd be sooo beautiful with natural hair; whether afros, twists or dreads. Their features look too harsh with straight hair. Just like white women with pointy features (Celine Dion) look to harsh with blonde, straight hair. It's not about race, just basic elements of design.
It's the same with every race. With whites, one false move with dye, you're trailer trash. With people of color, one false move, you look ghetto. I'm black and I stay away from red. With any shade of red my skin looks ashy and I look like I'm 'bout to cut somebody! Too scared to try blonde...I have very vocal friends and family and I don't wanna hear it.
