Ok, call me crazy - but I just don't get this latest "literary hoax" business. In literature, one is prone, if not EXPECTED, to take "artistic license", no? I mean, it's one thing if you print lies in an encyclopedia....but fucking literature? So if you dramatize things a bit, add some flourish, if only to make your work more READABLE/INTERESTING/BEAUTIFUL....that makes you a "fraud", now? I dont get it!

I posted above...its not good-and I thought this before this whole scandal came out. I remember reading the back cover about the author and being surprised that he was only 18 or so when he wrote it. I actually assumed that this was not a memoir, but a work of fiction, it was so bad!!!
The writing is mediocre, the story was ok. I never bothered reading the rest of his works.

Nia, the book is a poorly written piece of poo. Don't waste your time! I had the misfortune of having "Sarah" (the biog in question; "The heart is deceitful"...came later.) foisted upon me by a friend, who had read and loved it. It is by far the most pretentious, mediocore piece of trash I have ever waded through and I smelt B.S from the get - go. Winona was only one in a very long line. JT Leroy was very good buddies with Carrie Fisher and used to stay at her house a lot. Asia Argento got sucked in obviously, and Shirley Manson even wrote "Cherry Lips" about this retard. If you want to read a GOOD biog, then give "The Liar's Club" by Mary Karr a go.

I think we need to distinguish between literary fraud and out and out fraud. People have used non de plumes for ever, people use ghostwriters... that's not fraud. Making people care about you/ getting their money and attention by lying to them -- that's a whole other kind of fraud.

This is so not news. Writers use pen names (noms de plume) all the time. See Elleston Trevor, AKA Adam Hall, Simon Rattrey, etc., for example. Normally, they don't use stand-ins for appearances, but how exactly does this differ in any essential way from a public figure using a ghost writer? How many of those celebrity tell-all books do you think were actually written by the celebrities in question? 1, 2, 5 percent? Are these celebrities not fronting for the actual writer to sell more books in exchange for a cut of the proceeds? Is this contributing to global warming or the slow erosion of our constitutional freedoms? I think not. Can't we find something better to discuss?

The JT Leroy thing really doesn't bother me. In fact, I'm kind of envious that I didn't come up with it myself because it really is a brilliant idea and to pull it off for so long in a time when its so easy to get background info on anyone is bloody genius if you ask me. And then, to get a whole load of public people with reputations to protect to lie for you? Like I said before, brilliant. Good writing is good writing so if you ask me all the praise, etc. that "JT Leroy" got is earned. Plus, if the guy who wrote all of Shakespeare's plays could do the same thing this Laura Albert person isn't exactly setting a precedent.
I'll even say the same thing about James Frey. I think he deserved to get demonized only partially. It was fair that his deception was uncovered but that doesn't mean the man isn't a good writer. He just shouldn't have been so weasily about it after getting caught.
