I'm black and my parents immigrated to this country and some of the things I have seen really break my heart. I feel ashamed to admit this, but Katrina exposed the raw side of Black culture. Forget what the federal and local govt. didn't do and lets look at what the people themselves didn't do. They didn't buy insurance for their homes yet had money to buy Jordans, 24s, and Gucci purses. They are unemployed in Houston while NO is BEGGING for workers to fill jobs. They broke into stores to steal flat screen TVs that wouldn't work anyway because their walls were saturated with water. Yet, for every mishap, there is another person to blame. As much as Condi gets on my damned nerves, as a Black woman she is an example of what hard work can lead to. Not quite sure who that was directed to, but I was in Florida helping my godmother move her stuff out of her house that was damaged by the previous hurricanes...I'm from CA by the way..I think people are trying to say, in my opinion, is that when tragedy strikes on such a large scale you expect the government, both state and fed, to have a PLAN. It was obvious, at least to me, that neither Nagen(sp) or the Feds did what was necessary to protect those people. As for Condi R. she is an intelligent, strong black woman. I would consider her a good role model, I just don't agree with her politics, but that's a separate issue. As for her shopping for shoes when the hurricane hit, it just lends credence(sp) to the belief that this Administration cares nothing about its people that are not in the highest economic bracket!

The people in New Orleans who didn't leave are those who for the most part had no way to leave. Much of New Orleans is poor (black and white), and these people do not have cars. The public transportation out of New Orleans was shut down, which trapped these people in the city. How anyone can have the gall to say these people are at fault for staying is simply disgusting. Almost as disgusting as the administration that did nothing to help them.

Reggie: I don't understand your last comment to me. Why do I have to read the gov. report on Katrina when I live 35 miles southwest of New Orleans and *KNEW* what kind of non-plan the city had? I know what happened - everyone did, they saw it on TV. All I said was that I was frustrated with people continuing to make comments and stir up controversy when the *real* controversy is the fact that we desperately NEED levees and a real rebuilding plan.
And no, I don't think there can possibly be a plan out there that could have evacuated a major American city in three days. But we definitely needed something better than the Superdome as a shelter of last resort. Every hurricane season in SE Louisiana brought warnings about 35 feet of water in downtown New Orleans if there was a direct hit with a category 5. Katrina didn't even live up to that... and look what happened!
All levels of government are at fault for this one - but damn if the locals couldn't have made it an easier rescue effort by actually having a decent plan.

I am married to an African man...yes, he is black. He says that if Africa one of the names for American Blacks is "The lucky ones". He also said that White Americans are liked much more than Black Americans. Many of his friends here get picked on and made fun of by African Americans. What Spike Lee has said is the same thing that my black children who are all in AP classes here from other blacks who are not in the program. We see life as we are and not as it is . Condi's parents raised her to believe that she was as good as any person of any color. As Chris Rock said in one of his dvd's . too many in the black community are more impressed with someone who has been in jail than someone who has graduated from college.

For the record.FEMA cannot come in until the state asks. Money that should have been spent to maintain the levy was spent for the sports arena.
