Often when a movie has no budget to pay actors they write something in the contract like if we make a profit over $x you will then receive x% of the profits or $x equal to your normal pay. So I don't think this is really an unreasonable lawsuit. What I don't understand is why he thought an Ang Lee movie wouldn't make any money. Oh wait. The Hulk. I remember now.

The same thing happened to that guy from the Princess Bride. He was the main character in SAW, and was only paid $30,000. The movie went on to be HUGE! I don't know if he ever got his money though.

Actually, Randy Quaid is a respected actor with a long list of successful films - and not just National Lampoon. He has been around since "The Last Picture Show" (early 1970's).
So, when he took a cut in money to make this film and it took in a huge amount of revenue, something isn't right. Someone made a lot of money and he deserves his share.
There are a zillion accountants in Hollywood who specialize in screwing people over and making a $20 million dollar movie that made $200 million in domestic revenue look like it broke even. So, that they don't have to pay people any of their fair share of net profits.
They gave him a year-long membership in the jelly of the month club instead.

Uh-huh. Well, whether or not the movie deserved the Oscar is not the point. The point is that Ang Lee is a complete 'tard who got up to receive his award quoting that completely obnoxious line 'I wish I could quit you' and then went on to jump on his own bandwagon and say he was surprised he didn't win best picture. Wha?? This *was* a low-budget art-house type movie. It happened to get the press and buzz b/c of the subject matter and then lived up to the hype. Duh.

Kudos to him for his critically acclaimed body of work, but let's call a spade a spade, he's not exactly on too many people's short list. He lucked out with that one. The same with Independence Day. He was not the lead actor. Get over yourself. And his lawyer's claim that he would command in that range anyway is a joke. Please!!!!! Open a few movies as the LEAD, where they gross over $100 million and then come crying.

It sounds like Randy is expecting the filmmakers to bwe psychic. Part of the hype was that movies like this DON'T make a lot of money and it did in spite of itself. He would have to prove they knew it would be a hit. No filmmaker can know, before they even start shooting a movie, it's going to be a hit.
