It may not have been his own, but regardless, his voice and singing is still good.

Usually he's right on -- an asshole -- but right on.

I love Chris, but I agree that not owning up to the artists he's inspired by or copying off of comes across as sneaky and arrogant. Maybe he just doesn't know any better. Maybe he figures that people may already know where the inspirtion comes from. But he still, for PR reasons, give the proper people their props.
I think Chris is doing what the others should be doing. He knows his style, his audience and his limitations so he consistently finds music and arrangements that suit his voice and style. Imagine how it would be if he sang "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" with the original arrangement.

you people are thick. everyone on idol fucking covers someone elses songs! so what if he did choose to do Live's version, he has said on idol that Live is one of his favorite bands. the man can sing. end of story. and half the fucking people on here going off about the Live version of this song probably never even fucking listened to any Live song other than fucking Lightning Crashes. And if they had played the Live rendition TO THE END you would have heard that Chris does the vocals completely differently. So if he is covering a cover song (which he did with Higher Ground too, but still kicked ass) then his cover of the cover is the BETTER COVER BECAUSE HE HAS SOME SERIOUS TALENT.
Its not that he's covering a cover that makes me mad, its the fact that he takes credit for the cover of the cover as if HE was the one who made it up. The judges are swooning about how creative he is and he just takes the compliment without giving credit where credit is due. LAME

Let's face it, good or not good, this dude should enjoy his 15 minutes because in 5 seasons of AI, only the first winner is a legitimate star. The rest have all been able to extend their 15 minutes but not by much. So let Chris take all the credit he wants until his bald head gets big enough that he leaves his fat wife. Once AI has sucked the soul out of him for the next year with that horrible tour they make the top 12 do, he'll be doing country fairs billed as "American Idol Contestant Chris Daughtry" and none of us will give a shit about him anyway.
It doesn't matter if someone sings a cover song, sometimes the cover is better than the original, just give credit where credit is due, don't pretend it was your own brilliant idea to sing a song a certain way when it wasn't.

The big deal is NOT THE FACT THAT HE didn't give props to LIVE when he sang the song, whatev who cares.
This whole mess is all the judges fault, they made it seem like he was some fucking musical genious because of the version. They obviously had no clue it was a LIVE song, and by not being aware of that, it misleads the general voting audience into thinking Chris is some insane composer - which I think will get him tons more votes for absolutely no reason. No fair. Waaa waaa aaaaa
If you read his profile on the AI web site, he even mentions that one of his favorite bands is Live. I think he's being wisely selective in picking songs/covers/adaptations that keep him in his comfort zone.

on australian idol last year one of the 'punk' contestants kept singing songs like a punk version of roxanne and getting major credit for thinking of it...then i started noticing how they were identical to punk covers e.g fall out boy had done. its obviously an idol tradition now a desperate attempt to get votes. ha

2. chris never said anything about arranging or writing that song all on his own
3. when the judges said he made the song his own, it meant he got his own personality in the song but not that he wrote or arrange it himself
4. everyone else on the show tries to do their song choice like the original so back off!

Until and unless the AI singers are required to write and sing their own original music (which will never happen) - every.single.one.of.them is singing cover songs. Who gives a shiat which version of a cover song he sang? He is so clearly the most marketable idol it's not even funny. The only reason why I'm rooting for him is so that he can remain on my tv screen. It would be a huge gift to his career at this point if he was voted off and could go on his merry way fronting a hugely successful band. Look at J.D. Fortune on Rock Star INXS - love him too!

He probably said something about the song already being re-done by live (it may have been cut out when we viewed it on tv).but it still IS different and he definately "made it his own". I think he's doin a hell of a job of being "himself" and stickin to what he does well, no matter what the theme or song is that he is doing.i have 2 favs this year and chris is one of them
