That was pretty rude on Jake's part. In all the promo for Brokeback Mountain, I felt like the actors (particularly Jake) were using their "courage" at taking a gay role to be otherwise completely homophobic. I'm still among the crowd that believes Jake likes to take it up the chocolate slide more than he's willing to admit.

I'm glad someone said it, not only Jake's off and ungenerous performance in BBM showed he was more concerned about keeping his straight status than making this important role come to life, but his comments about the film said a lot about the type of person he is. Sorry not a fan.

Jake's performance in BBM was incredible - I personally think it's a lot more difficult to express vulnerability and hurt than repressed feelings. I have repression down to a science but nobody's giving me kudos for my acting ability. The guy is living his own personal BBM right now - give him a break. If you listen to him speak he is intelligent and thoughtful about what he says. I can't say the same for Heath.

I felt Jake's PR for BBM was a bit off and on. First he'd say something positive, then he'd backtrack with something that made him sound terrified. The 'jumping in a cold lake and jumping out fast' bit about kissing Heath? Ack. It was nothing. I'd do it for free, wouldn't bother me.
Even so, I love Jake and think he's just finding his own way right now, bit by bit.

Sigh: I think A was referring to the general audience (not Ian). Ian is a highly respected and remarkable actor (I don't think anybody would debate that point). I think Jake (and Heath) were asked so many times about kissing another man that they may have said some stupid things along the way just not to repeat the same thing over and over. Jake was asked at one point if he was sick of answering questions about the movie. He said that he didn't think he'd ever get tired of discussing it except maybe the question "what was it like to kiss another man?" He said that every single interviewer asked that question and that they must have been getting tired of hearing him and Heath giving the same answers over and over: "it was like kissing a person" "it was like kissing a woman" etc. I think Ian took Jake's comments out of context.
