According to the American Anthropological Association (who sets the formal categories for race), Latinos are White. If you don't believe me, go look at any federal document (i.e. a census form) that asks your racial classification. Some of them separate into White- Not of Hispanic Origin and White (Hispanic), but most don't.
So, techincally, the Puerto Rican thing CAN'T be a race thing. Ethnicity, yes, but race, no.
Incidently, Arabs are also considered White.
Anonymous, FYI: These are very old definitions of race which date back centuries. It obviously never took into consideration variations on race, etc.
Latino is a culture for some and for some Latinos, it is a race.
There are many black Latinos particularly in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Belize etc. They have black skin - yet they are still Latino because they are of the Latino culture. They speak either Spaish or Brazilian, etc.
For some, Latino is a race of people made up of a mixture of Native American, Black and White and from the Latin American continent and from the Central American continent.
Arabs: There are black Arabs in Egypt, Algeria. Saudi Arabia, all over North African and the Middle East. So this classification does not make sense because there are people of Arabic blood who are dark skin (black) with Afrocentric features - not white.
Also, would you consider Bin Laden White? He is Arabic. He certainly does not consider himself White.
Again these labels are quite old and peoples of the world have chosen different ways of defining themselves.
For example the word mulattoe was used to describe a person who was the product of one black parent and one white parent. Yet, in the US, legislature stated that any person with 1% black blood was technically black. The one drop rule. So you see, it all depends on what time in history you are alluding to, etc.
The racial labels have evolved as racial groups intermingle.

wiser and mandy: I'm not the same "anonymous" you're referencing. I don't have a problem with Latinos. What I do have a problem with are people of any particular culture or race blaming others for where they are today based on past wrongs. Throughout history people of all races have been enslaved and slaughtered. It's going on even today and will continue to go on in different parts of the world probably forever because people are cruel and selfish.
The only people (Latinos or otherwise) that I have a problem with are those who are in the US illegally or are here as US citizens and hate this country but feel fine about taking advantage of all it offers.
I live in Southern CA and experience firsthand the effects of illegal immigration. So I get irritated when people like Chiquita pose their race or culture as better than others when in fact they aren't.

Puerto Ricans are part Native American and what Chiquita is saying is her ancestors were killed and the Puerto Ricans today are the survivors of this atrocity. Latinos are part Native American. Remember Native Americans were all over the Americas.

I know Southern California quite well and the Latinos are the servants, restaurant cooks, grape pickers, housecleaners, car wash attendants, parking attendants etc. We all benefit from their hard work as illegal immigrants that is why our produce is so cheap then we turn around and hate them for being here. Stop exploiting their labor then if you hate it so much. Why don't more poor Americans do the dirty work that they are doing? And don't tell me it is because the illegals are here taking those jobs away. Look at all the illegal immigrant construction workers building homes? Why do you think that keeps your building costs down? Because some poor Mexican is building it with no health insurance or no liability insurance. If you hate it, stop exploiting it.
I also believe history is important. You cannot blame the state of the Latino race on Latinos themselves. America is built so a certain number of people are on the bottom while some are on top. No matter how hard a group of people work, their kids will never benefit from the rewards of America - that is how Capitalism works. The Latinos I know work really hard. Like I said, I have friends who have many Latino/Mexican babysitters/housekeepers, etc. They ARE working hard - they are just not seeing the benefits of it and it is our capitalist racist history's fault , how can you deny that?
Also, tell Bush to do something about sealing the borders then..Naaaaaah. His cocaine supply would not be able to get through if he does that. Dubya = Hypocrite.

You're not Native American. I know for a fact you're not. I go to many POW WOW's with Native American friends and they are pissed as HELL that no matter what they do they are on a freakin' reservation and their kids have high rates of HS pregnancy, alcoholism and drop out rates.
You can't blame that all on the Native Americans.
