The thing is with an organization like PETA or for any one that thinks the fur trade is disgusting, like myself for example, those involved in the fur trade are not our concern and they're not innocent bystanders that should be taken care of (NOTE: I don't support violence against these people).
There are a million immoral jobs I could take just for the money but I chose not to. People in the fur trade and ranchers are also capable of making that choice.
And anyway, the reprussions of shipping jobs away have not been all that negative and neither has NAFTA. Just look at Canada and US unemployment rates. So, coddling rachers and fur traders is completely unnecessary. They will find other jobs if forced.
I'm more annoyed that Beyonce doesn't say a thing. Nothing in her defence. I guess you reach a certain celeb status and you don't have to talk anymore when things get tough, everyone talks for you. How pathetic. I hate that she uses animal fur anyway, it's completely not necessary. And I'm not a PETA fan either.. but good for them. At least they weren't slinging blood or anything.

I am a Canadian. I'm fully aware of the shortcomings of NAFTA, but the predictions that unemployment rates would rise due to the fact that Mexico's wages are so low has been proven to be without merit. We dealt with the loss of our manufacturing jobs by shifting to the service and knowledge sectors. America did the same.
Similarly, the argument that fur traders and ranchers will somehow starve or become unemployed for long periods of time holds no water. If their jobs became illegal, they would find other fields to work in.

actually it isn't just the ranchers, it is the feed lot people, and the supermarket people, and some areas of the construction industry or at least the glue industry and the cosmetics industry (guess what is in your shampoo...mooooo...). and it doesn't just affect those that are a part of those industries, it is taking away the money that is generated from those parts of the economy out of the economy. it is great to make changes in you own life and buy organic and locally owned stuff to control pollution and cruelty and to buy no animal product shampoos and stuff, it is all out there. and this fosters change much better than guerilla tactics because they feel the pinch in pocket and start slowly phasing out what isn't accepted. but rabid guerilla activism causes people to dig in their heels and refuse to entertain solutions, especially if there are no viable alternatives presented. you can't wipe out a whole segment of the economy over morals and expect that is going to make the world better. not to mention, when you wipe out the jobs, and all associated areas of employment, where are all of those people going to find jobs?

I just have to comment on the abuse of animal video PETA likes to use to shock people into thinking our entire garment industry is adorning coats with dog and cat fur. This video was filmed in CHINA. They eat dogs and cats in some locations there. Eating dogs and cats and using dog or cat fur is illegal in the U.S.
You are not wearing Fido on your collar. There was also a rumor spread that dog food companies were using killed dogs and cats from SPCA for their product. Untrue again. The animal atrocities in many countries like China are horrific, but they have nothing to do with fur collars on coasts here in the U.S. Retailers have to be sure that garments are not made out of dog and cat fur which is illegal here. Rabbit, fox, mink, sable, ect but no dog.
If you don't like the idea of animals being killed to make fur products, don't wear them. Eveyone has a right to live their own life without being harrassed by others who are trying to "convert" them to their beliefs. I wouldn't tolerate a Jehovah' Witness railing on me, I certainly would not tolerate a PETA avocate either.
just for the record, you could and you may be wearing fido on your collar....all chinese dog and cat fur is exported to europe where it is turned into fur trimmings....these fur trimmings then get exported all over the world, including America. There is a bill being argued in congress about requiring labeling of this "domestic pet" fur, but it has not been passed.

Hey, that's great this is your cause, you might want to check out starving children in Africa, the malaria problem, abused children, AIDS, and just about any of the lower income kids trapped in crime infested gettos in the U.S. that get shot just walking to school. Between asian places still selling dogs/cats as main dishes in foreign restaurants (all you have to do is visit some places over seas to see North American cocker spaniels in cages for next night dinner) - to Celebs using fur for next days products - I don't endorse her or anyone else adorning the next "fashion" statement if it has to do with any animal fur. Who cares if it's fact or real? It's 2006 people. But animals (from endangered animals to stolen pets) are kept in obscene conditions, and have and continue to be skinned ALIVE for their fur, and all when fake fur is readily available! I've just watched the video (got sidetracked by the comments first) and I have to say they did it in a very respectful manner. I am dead against fur, but that doesn't mean I condone all PETA's actions, sounds like they get up to some crazy shit. And please stop bringing the Lord into this because you are obviously not familier with the fact that yeah, if you're a believer, you have dominion over animals, and that means respecting what God created, but it never ever suggests that an animal supercedes the needs of man. I'm someone who will do all I can to make sure I can assist even a fly in getting away unscathed because it serves a purpose on this earth and in the cycle of life, but if it comes down to me and that fly not finding the exit I'm offering, he's on his way back into the food chain. How is leather better than fur? Do you really think the skin of a mangy, flea ridden factory farmed cow would be suitable for making shoes? Leather comes from animals which are specially bred for it, it isnt a by-product of the meat industry. Of all our consumer excesses I have never understood why fur is the most demonized. Cheap cotton clothing is saturated with pesticides, which poisons the growers. Each diamond sold in the West has cost at least 2 or 3 African lives.
