Nick, from what I understand, he had a serious problem with his mother not accepting him. Considering that she basically kept him alive during their time in the concentration camp, perhaps he didn't feel he could disrespect her wishes by coming out of the closet during her lifetime.

I just can't figure out how people didn't know he was gay. For some reason, I'd heard he was gay several years before he came out. I was surprised that I seemed to have been the only one who knew. o_O
