People can think they're right all they want and even if they are right all along, they don't really know for a fact they are unless they see it for themselves or it comes straight from the person who is under speculation. MK, while I think you're right about Perez's reason for outing Lance Bass had nothing to do with gay rights, one can't deny that if many more people - famous, well-known, well-loved respected people - came out it would indeed make being gay more acceptable to the general public. It's a little like having a member of your immediate family come out: it forces people to be more tolerant and humane because they see and know the person, not just the 'label.'
On the other hand, history has shown time and again that the general public is uncomfortable with homosexuality, especially when confronted with it openly. Anyone who makes a living by their public image or is in the public eye would stand to lose a lot if they came out openly and I can understand why many do not (I do think the public is more tolerant of lesbians). Of course, by not coming out they help perpetuate the stigma towards gays (but only to a certain degree) and reap the scorn of other gays. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
Basically, the problem for gays comes from the fact they enagage in acts the majority population finds repulsive and no matter how well educated, tolerant or socialised the public might be there is this fundamental and profound difference. Sex is such an integral and primitive part of our lives - on the same level as eating and breathing - any serious differences of practice or preference in that area will, unfortunately, never be easily or widely tolerated.
It's a complicated issue with no easy or pleasant answers.

I wanted to put across a question that Michael Musto first bought my attention to; why is it ok and popular among gossip blogs to speculate about the private lives of straight celebrities i.e. who's dating who? who's cheating on who? who is anarexic? who's pregnant? and who is marrying who? However when it comes to a closeted celeb (who is living a secret gay life) its wrong, distasteful and horrible to talk or speculate about their private life?
I guess it just seems like a double standard and it seems a little odd to hear folks here talk about how perez should respect lance's privacy and keep his nose out of other people's business; this coming from people who frequently gossip about the private lives of other celebs (e.g. paris hilton, nicole kidman, Lindsay lohan, Colin Pharrell, Jennifer Anniston and the list goes on).
Saying their is a double standard, does mean such a double standard is bad, afterall coming to terms with one's sexuality (at least if your gay) is a very emotional, physcologicaly wearing thing that affects various personal aspects of one's life, therefore probobaly people like perez probably should be more considerate when it comes to outing people since this is something that affects one's family, personal relationships and career.
But what does it says about an industry and society that is more accepting/ forgiving of A.J. Nicholson and Colin Pharrel's drug and drinking problem, Hugh Grant and Jude Law' infedility, but some one like Lance has to worry about his sexual identity negatively affecting his carrer and those of his band mates.
Lastly while the outing of lance bass (which really cant be considered an outing, since all of Perez stories were merely speculation until lance confirmed it)is not gay rights. Seeing visible gay people shows many people especially those living in more conservative society that homosexuality is not some freakish fringe phenomenom, but a natural lifestyle for many decent people from all walks of life.

Regardless of their sexual orientations, there are actually some celebrities that want to keep their private lives private. Unfortunately for gay celebrities who want to keep that part of their lives sacred, homosexuality is still "scandalous" enough that any gossip hound thinks they'll get more attention by forcibly outing these celebrities. I think that's selfish and wrong.
I agree with the poster who said that Lance was an "easy target" and it was wrong for Perez to hound him. If, say, some blowhard bigot homophobe who has made a public career out of gay bashing turns out to be gay himself, by all means out him and expose his hypocrisy. But Lance? The guy is just trying to live his life and keep it somewhat normal.
