Hip hop is what rap was when it first started and what it still is to some. It incorporates all of the aspects of the culture: DJing, MCing, graffiti and breakdancing (though the last 2 are not as popular as they once were) and at that time, the uplifting of black people (or at the very least not degrading ourselves). Rapping (technically) is what they're doing with the actual words (the rhyme, the rhythm) at least that's what it used to mean. Rap (to me) now is like...Nelly. A real hip hop artist can freestlye and battle (something most rap artists out now can't do). Hip hop is the culture and the love of the art. Rap is for the love of the money or the notoriety and the accessibility of video hos. Hip Hop artists will not sound like the stuff they play on the radio. Hip hop is Common, The Roots, Mos Def, Outkast, etc. Someone doing something different or original. Rap is the stuff that makes people think that Hip Hop is crap when they are no longer one and the same. IMO Commons' song "I Used to Love Her" does a lovely job of illustrating exactly what happened to hip hop and is my favorite hip hop song ever even though it is a concept song.
