What happens is that he inexplicably pins her on the car and humiliates her in front of other people, leaving marks on her wrists that last for hours and bending her arm in a way that brings tears to her eyes, all the while berating her for the way someone else treated him in the press. He only tried to kiss her later, after the police intervened and she was going home. The irony of this and the writer's point in describing it was that he did the same "kiss and make up" thing to the girl he raped in the article.

I partially agree with this statement. first of all, it's not only a mother's job to teach their daughters AND their sons about these kind of people.
I will concede that part of this comes from being so damn naive. But that does not in any way, shape, or form, excuse the behavior of this guy or others like him.
