The property is now used for a college, Cal State Channel Islands, if you want to google it, I think you'll be able to ID the building the Eagles used on the album cover.

I have heard those rumors also. The line about 'we haven't had that spirit here since 1969' when he asks for wine was suppose to symbolize that they hadn't had the holy spirit (wine = lord's supper)since the church of Satan was established in 1969.
I have also heard that it was about a place for terminal cancer patients. Hence the lines 'they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast'and 'you can check out any time you like, but you can't never leave'.
