the problem, as i see it, with groups like PETA is that Steve did a lot more to educate people about these wild animals than alot of animal rights groups...frankly anytime a human being goes into the wild and tries to study a wild animal they are disturbing their natural habitat, thus putting the animals under stress...their has to be a balence between our educating ourselves about the world that we live in and maintaining the natural balence of things...i might not have agreed with all of Steves choices, in terms of how he delt with the animals, but he never harmed a single one! And i feel that the temporary strees that they were under was balenced by the fact that he was either trying to educate/preserve or protect that animal's life! This is just a cheep shot by PETA and they should be ashamed!

I agree with PETA, and so do millions of other people. Exactly how is it a conservationist method to stalk into an animal's territory, provoke it into attacking/reacting, then picking it up and pushing it into a camera? Shouldn't he have taught respect for the animals, like the Kratt brothers do?(LOVE them!) Harassing and exploiting animals, even if only temporarily, isn't respect.
That said, the ONLY appropriate comment for an organization or public figure to make is that Steve Irwin's death was a terrible tragedy for his family, and that he was a well-loved man who will be missed.
For PETA, Germaine Greer, et al, to say anything more than that is shoddy and cruel.

Peta is not happy unless they are complaining. They talk all about there great love of animals, Steve Irwin was a man that ran a zoo and cryed when the animals in his zoo got hurt or died. He has educated the youth of the world about how amazing and dangerous animals can be. All Peta has done is looked at numbers on paper and complained bout animals near extinction and targeted celebrities for attention. Although I agree with some of PETAs beliefs I do think they are completly out of line here.

the problem with this argument is that temporarily disturbing an animals natural habitat is unfortuneatly part of the conservation/education effort. How do you think organizations go about getting their information for conservation efforts? They go into an animals environment, tranq and tag them, so they can then monitor them to learn how to best help! How do you think they know which animals are endangered? Many of these animals have been tagged...which involved a temporary invasion into their territory...we just have to weigh the impact we have against the greater good of being able to help. I think Steve did a pretty good job, just cause it was caught on camera doesn't demean his efforts (IMO)

About a year ago, the family of Jaques Cousteau and some of the people who worked with him on his documentaries admitted that not all of their fottage was shot in the wild.
In fact, some of the scenes are created by capturing animals and taking them to holding tanks, where on occassion they would be provoked into fights and predation to show their "natural" behavior.

Which sends Oprah over the edge, she stands up and says "A dog or a child what does it matter? A life is a life!" I about pissed my pants. I can imagine this happening to me and instead of him grabbing my dog he grabs my kid and throws her. What is a mother to say? Thank God he didn't get my dog?????

If Steve truly frightened/antagonized animals he would've died a long time ago considering most of the animals he worked with could've killed him with very little effort if they wanted to. I think most people would agree that crocs, snakes, etc. are hardly defenseless. Did anyone see the croc hunter marathon on animal planet yesterday? it was so good!!
he and his wife spent his birthday trying to comfort whales that were dying on a beach. i cried- it was such a sweet yet tragic thing. they couldnt save the whales so they were there just trying to be of comfort to them. he truly loved animals- and when catching crocs it was to save them or relocate them without using tranquilizers which can be dangerous to the crocs.

Most people who make comments like this have probably never watched an episode of Croc Hunter and don't have a clue about what they're saying. Steve Irwin never tortured an animal in his life and everything he did was to try to help them. Do you know that the only money he and Terri made was their salary from the zoo? It's a shame, since the real, solid, positive work they once undertook has been completely overshadowed in recent years by this trend, and their reliance on having lunatics as spokespeople. I give to the animal shelters and the wildlife fund, but not PETA anymore.

I don't support PETA either but they certainly have a place in this world. There are thousands of org that cater to helping people from UNICEF to Doctors without Borders to the Red Cross on and on. PETA helps animals and I'm glad they do b/c they bring attention to many causes we just take for granted. I do support the ASPCA which also trie to lobby for animals rights but aren't zealous like PETA. I do think PETA goes overboard but I also think they have a place in the pecking order.

I can agree that we all have to share this planet, but like it or not, humans are at the top of the evolution chain, alot of times we act as if we don't deserve it, but that's how evolution (or creationism, whatever you believe in) played it out.
I love animals, and believe they should be treated ethically, but I'm a human being, and there are people in my own species who aren't treated ethically. PETA worries about animal right when not all humans have their rights, regardless of how many non-profits are dedicated to that. PETA disregards human life except for the ones that serve their own needs. They were deader than dead to when they were more concerned about the donkeys with bombs strapped to them in Palistine, but not the children who were killed by those bombs, and they said so.

What is the matter with this idiot from PETA? Steve Irwin loved and respected and these animals. He caught many crocs that were considered "problem animals" (like Agro) who would have been killed otherwise, and cared for in his zoo. His group did much for conservation and yes he "hammed it up" for the cameras but as a way to draw attention to these animals. I have an appreciation for reptiles (crocs, snakes, lizards) that I never would have otherwise if it weren't for Steve Irwin. He was a committed family man, (helped deliver his own child too), and treated everyone who was involved with his zoo and organization the same, whether a janitor or a producer on the show. He was a hell of a man and I never saw anything I'd call harrassment of the animals he interacted with. He was one tough hombre and had an incredible bond with his wife and kids. Anyone who would try and tarnish his memory with lies and petty criticism is ignorant and nothing but trash.

The thing about Irwin is while I found him very likeable, I would think when he did his thing that "one of these days".....And when he had his child in his arms with that alligator I thought he was effin crazy no matter what he said about being in control of the situation. Thing is, if you aren't some animal "whisperer" or able to read their minds, you don't know what the hell is on their minds or what their capable of doing at any given moment. Look at what happened to Roy of Sigfried and Roy after all those years with those tigers. They're wild animals, not dogs or cats. We don't know their language or their rules of behavoir no matter how much we study them. We just don't know. That ray that killed him may have been protecting it's brood or it's females or just letting him know he was too close for comfort. i do not think that the australians have understood Irwins message. They still killing dingo's sharks, even when they are swimming outside the designated area's/ Australians should life with wild life, not the other way around. I did question why Irwin always had to jump on the crocs. If it was entertaining or not, we humans have given him what he wanted, we looked at it, so we made an icon of him, good on him.
