I doubt if TO is on Steroids. Hes just too cocky to acknowledge that he needs any help at being the best.
And I highly doubt that any high profile athlete let alone a black man would attempt suicide for media attention. Although its getting better the black community as is very unwilling to acknowledge mental illness/issues. I can not tell you how many aunts I had growing up who were just "quirky" and who now I realize were stone cold bat shit crazy! So, good luck to him. He is going to be crucified for having "given" in. You know men in general will not be very supportive.

I think that TO is probably bipolar. All that macho, narcissistic bull crap was probably just a cover-up for that fact that he truly is depressed and hates himself. I heard that when he was younger his father lived across the street his whole life and he didn't even know it. Then his mom dropped that bomb on him one day. That could definetely contribute to some depression.
Anyone who thinks just because his is a rich athlete that can have sex with whoever he wants, that he can't have mental problems, really needs to realize that anyone can be affected by mental illnesses no matter their economic or social status.

Yeah of course that's all you can say, b/c apparently you're a MORON! I think the people that make stupid comments like that fail to realize that a HUMAN LIFE is involved. So what if he's an overpaid athlete, that means he should die? Maybe he worked his ass off to get there, maybe he had a terrible childhood, maybe he's severely depressed. Until you've actually known how terrible suicide is, you need to STFU b/c if you realized how horrible it is to go through such debilitating sadness you would not be making those comments. He's still a person dammit.

I'll preface this by saying I have no interest in sports, and I live and work practically in the Cowboys' backyard. However, I've gained some insight on Mr. Owens from the radio station I listen to, which has a sports commentator in the mornings along with the regular two-DJ team. From what this commentator has said, it seems that TO is famous for doing just about anything to avoid actually practicing and playing, despite making far more money on his contract than he'll ever need. I hope this isn't just an extension of that behavior. That being said, I also hope that he gets the help he needs.

Terrell Owens loves himself more than anyone else on this planet and there is no way this guy tried to off himself. I think he was just worried because his name hasn't really been in the news for what like a week now? So he had to do something to get people talking again.

You people are so ignorant. It doesn't matter about his money, his fame, his house, cars, or women. Depression doesn't discriminate. If you're familar with the drama with Donovan McNabb, you'd realize that Donovan was just as much to blame as T.O. I'm not making excuses for him, but he considered Donovan a friend, and when Donovan did something that hurt him deeply, he lashed out. He did the same with Andy Reid. He doesn't deal with his emotins like a rational adult, because he is emotionally still a child. And if you'd read up on his troubled childhood you'd understand why. He's been thru a lot and his success on the field is a testament to how he has tried to deal with his hardships. He is blessed by God with superior athletic ability but he is also a hard worker. he just does not know how to deal with people. Plus he is insecure and extremely senstive. When his feelings are hurt he reacts like a five year old. He doesn't love himself and feels nobody in the world (except his grandmother) loves him. There's a good chance as well he is bi-polar. Just have some compassion people. It's just football and what he did to the Eagles will not make the world stop spinning.

I can't buy it. I think he was serious, only because of the method of suicide chosen. Why would a macho black man choose pain relieving pills -- to get attention? Suicide is already is de-manning; you're not taking out anybody but yourself. It's like saying to the world 'Hi, I'm a little bitch who can't take care of my own problems'. And then to do it by prescription pills?
Prescription pills is what females do. It's the 'nice' way to die. Why emasculate yourself through your choice of suicide? Why not a gun, or hanging or railroad tracks, or getting in your car and driving really fast and hitting a wall? If Terrell Owen wanted the kind of attention you're talking about, why emasculate himself with pills?
I think this is serious. I think he meant to kill himself. I think he's in a bad spot, and that the cry for attention was a cry for help... not a cry for 'look at me, I want my name in the paper, I want you to talk about me'.

....Depression and suicide suck, both my brother and sister committed suicide.....
I'm sorry for your loss...depression is sheer hell-take it from one who has it.
I take meds for it-have been off and on for 20+ years.
Mabye that's why I'm so fat (haha).
When you hit the pit that is suicidal depression, you can't think right, can't talk, can't do crap...it's a war just to get out of bed, let alone take care of yourself.
That being said...5 pills? Now this guy (I know jack about football, but I am from Philly originally..) just may be trying to get some help in a roundabout way. Males don't usually own up to being depressed.
Thank God he wasn't really determined....usually-being a male? He probably would have used a gun, and when you are up against a bullet wound, your chances of recovery are slim and none.

What did Donovan do to make TO flip out and go crazy with the hurt?
Nita | 09.27.06 - 12:28 pm | #
-----------------------------------
To answer your question Nita, there were a few things that set T.O. off. During his first season with the Eagles, they made the Superbowl. The previous three years, when TO was not on the squad, the Eagles could get no further than the NFC championship game. So they added TO and finally were able to get over that hump. Because as much as people complain about his off the field antics, when it comes down to playing football he is undeniable. So they were playing in the Superbowl and Donovan was choking basically. TO was trying to hype him up, to get him be the leader a QB is supposed to be, and Donovan told him to "shut the fuck up" in the middle of the huddle, in front of the whole offense. Now to a person like you or me, we might just shrug it off. But to a person like TO, sensitive as he is, it really hurt his feelings. He considered Donovan a friend and he was only trying to be helpful. Plus, he had just come back from a serious knee injury and shouldn't even have been playing in that game. He played hurt in order to give his team a better chance of winning, and he was pretty much the only good thing about the Eagles in that game. Donovan totally fucking choked, while TO produced. So that's what started the downward spiral between the two of them.
Then in his second season, before he was suspened from the team, he'd reached a milestone. I could look it up but I don't feel like it, but it had something to do with reaching a certain number of catches or touchdowns. The Eagles refused to acknowledge his accomplishments. The reaons the refused to acknowledge it is b/c of the war of words that TO and Donovan got into following the Superbowl incident. But they lied and said they didn't acknowlege it b/c they don't recongize individual achievements. But I'm sure if it was company man Donovan reaching a certain number of passes or touchdown throws, there would have been some type of recognition there. So again, he felt hurt and unappreciated.
Sorry about typing all of these long posts. i just have always felt for TO because I believe he is deeply misunderstood. Plus there are enough people hating him, I feel it doesn't hurt to have a few people who are in his corner.

Can't Say - hang in there really. I too have been thru a hellish few years and things are not getting much better but you HAVE to hang in there. I read in one of my thousands of articles/books about depression that you must have 3 things to get you thru and be happy:
1. Someone/thing to love
2. Work (not necc.paid) that you believe in and makes you feel like you are making a valueable contribution
3. Something to look forward too
I really belive those three things are key. Trust me, we are all a work in progress.

I personally can't stand the guy after what he did to his coaches and teammates in Philly. To then have him sign onto another multi-million dollar contract with Jerry Jones' Dallas "Queerboys", I felt that they were made for one another.
I truly hope he gets the help he needs, but it is hard for me to feel sympathy for people (i.e. coddled athletes) whose cup has been filled many times over with fortune and priviledge.
Welcome to real life Terrell!

I might be missing something here and I don't discount that it takes someone seriously screwed up to try to kill themselves, but if you really want to die don't you NOT take pills (if that's your chosen method) in front of your friends? First his friend saw all the pills were gone, then TO waits to take 2 more until his friend was watching? Seems a little like a cry for help to me. I think it was a cry for help, and he didn't mind the attention that was going to come his way either.
That said, it's sad, but I think there's more to the story. He didn't really want to die. You do this sort of thing privately, not around people/friends who care about you and will do what they can to stop it.

Can anyone say "publicity"? He just wants attention every day all day. Did anyone see him back when he was in Philly doing situps and shit on his driveway?!? What's up with that? Thank God he is not the Eagles problem anymore. If he really wanted to kill himself he should have used a gun - you know he probably has an arsenol. Or he could have called up an Eagles fan - any of them would have happily pulled the trigger.

The only thing that is keeping me from believing this story is that if you attempt suicide, they don't pump your stomach and then release you; they usually put you in the psychiatric ward for observation. They let TO go.

LuLu..the problem he had with McNabb is that he was jealous of his stable two parent, normal up bringing. TO had a tough life growing up with no male role models in his life. He has the talent to be one of the greatest players of all time but when it comes down to it he probably has nothing and no one. He should get help, keep his mouth shut and play football if that is what he wants. Once he realizes the world does not revolve around him the better off he will be.

Re: TO situation
Heard some good info on Dan Patrick. He says if TO tried to commit suicide first the hospital wouldn't let him leave and second The Cowboys wouldn't let him leave.
An officer came on and said if they respond to a situation like this they call a crisis/suicide response number let them know the situation and find out if that person has ever tried anything like this before. If not, they are allowed to release the person if they agree to admit themselves into treatment right away.
He went on further to say if the person holds a conference and says everything is okay I am fine I didn't try to commit suicide, they will then come and arrest the individual."
Did anybody else hear this, or listen to the dan patrick show? or know anything about what happens after an attempted suicide police report and trip to the hospital?

So, TO ultimately saw McNabb as a role model? TO really did feel McNabb stabbed him in the back? When people get jealous like that, there's love behind it. I hope Donovan makes a call to Terrell, and these two put their shit behind them.

Why should McNabb have to be his role model? He's the leader on the field and these are grown men making millions of dollars. It is not even up to the coach to be a father figure. It looks to me he looks more to his crook agent as his role model..

20...ide_attempt.asp
excerpts taken from: "Terrell Owens' Suicide Attempt Highlights Major Male Sports Taboo" by Christopher McIntosh
....There are two great taboos left in major male sports.
Being openly gay.
Being mentally ill.
....Approximately 1-3% of the American public suffers from it.
Up to 15% of those clinically depressed die by suicide. In 1996 alone there were more than half a million suicide attempts. In 1997 alone more than 30,000 people died by suicide. ...No one is immune.
How many people know the back story of TO? ....Why didn't anyone ask why he was moody? Why he's longed for greater recognition and remuneration? In the most unintentionally insightful comment this author made, why was he "adolescent in his attempts to obtain them"?
His own hometown loves and reveres him, but will not put up official signage referring to the town as his home. His high school will not put him in the Hall of Fame.
He never found out who his father was until he fell for the girl across the street. He was told to leave her alone.
He didn't know she was his half-sister.
His mother was 17 when she had him and shipped him off to his grandmother to live, a woman named Alice Black.
Alice turned her house into a cave - drawing the drapes and keeping the windows shut. No TV, no telephone, and they were only allowed to leave this place for school and church.
According to a story in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, disobeying or talking back earned him a whipping.
So, do you think this man had the opportunity to live out his "adolescence"? To make the mistakes we all learn from in high school and never make again? Maybe, maybe not. We don't know. We do know the pressure on him was immense at Dallas, he was heralded as the savior, but his coach would not even refer to him by name in press conferences.
But ultimately the speculation is all irrelevant. The story of TO's brush with death tells me two things. No matter how many magazines we read, newspaper articles we consume, message boards we surf, we never can truly know the athletes we think we know backwards and forwards.
More importantly, it tells me that mental illness can strike anyone, regardless of position. Millions of people look up to major athletes. college football, the NFL, MLB, the NBA, their players are all heroes for children and adults, men and women. I hope that his experience can break the taboo. If at least one kid, one fan, one fantasy player sees his experience and decides to say, "enough", I'm going to deal with this issue as if it were chest pain or a broken leg, maybe something good will come out of this.
But mostly, I just hope that TO gets better.

Donovan didn't have to be his role model. It just sounds like he was his role model. TO and Donovan liked one another. Then Donovan goes off on TO in the way LuLu describes? Hmm. There was a friendship there that went to hell in a very ugly, very public, very nasty way. TO is obviously insecure. It sounds like nobody's every really truested Terrell Owens, starting with his own family. He's always told 'no' 'no' 'no'... and not always told why until too late. People are always making his decisions for him, even when he feels he's just doing the best for himself and for everybody. Maybe. TO didn't feel Donovan was being team leader in the way he should have been. TO was giving all, playing hurt -- very hurt. And Donovan just kinda dropped the ball. Donovan didn't trust Terrell? It puts all the shit about TO complaining about some of Donovan's choices on the field in that particular game, in perspective. Maybe TO wasn't grandstanding and being a narcissist all the way after all; maybe he had a point. Donovan's still cool. I just wish they could have patched up their differences and become a team again, and friends again.
And I'm not buying that this wasn't a suicide attempt. But they have to say what they have to say. Terrell Owens needs help. He needs it before he does something really crazy to himself, and succeeds.

TO has millions of dollars, one of the powerful players unions and excellent health benefits available to seek mental health. I wouldn't let him on that field until he is evaluated but the spin is in and it looks like he's not going to get any help. I pity him for that but I also pity the millions of people with mental disorders who have no money or health insurance or no powerful unions to protect them. On a more postitve note...GO RYAN HOWARD MVP!
