"plus sized models" are the NORM because they represent a more healthy body type...no one is saying that a size 24 or 32 is healthy, but anything in the modeling world over a size 4 is considered "plus sized"....and a size 12/14 is not fat...a person isn't determined to be "fat" just on looks alone it has to do with BMI (which you did mention)...a person can look chunky, but still be within their weight range....

I have some serious issues with my weight. While I do exercise, I still have to worry about:
hypertension (for now it's being controlled by exercise...but how long will that last? I don't know.) a risk for diabetes, a higher risk of colon and breast cancer (I think...)and God knows what else.
I was healthy back in the day....you pretty much have to be in the Army, or they kick your happy fat ass out pronto. I seperated from hubby, was in school, sat around stuffing my maw...and lo and behold-I look like Jabba the Hut.

Keep hope alive, those wishing to lose weight - I lost 60 pounds over a year and a half. No starving, no laxatives, no puking. Just common sense stuff. I started keeping track of what I ate - I wrote it all down - those "little snacks" I ate all the time added up. I didn't go to the gym. I walked an hour after work every day and cut way back on what I ate, but always ate at least 1300 calories a day. Sometimes you feel hungry. It's ok. And in combination with the exercise, your matabolism goes up and you burn it off. It takes time though. Be patient, don't give up. You just have to want to lose it and to get healthier.
The sad thing is, that living in America at 5'5" and 190 pounds, I didn't even feel that overweight, even though I was and didn't feel happy about it. It's unhealthy. Mentally too, I mean. Just because the average American woman is a size 12 - 14 doesn't make that healthy - most of those women are overweight. There is a height/weight ratio that works for the majority of people (except muscular athletes) called BMI. People on here are being defensive, saying no one should dare to call size 12-14 "fat" ... ok, but it is overweight for most women. It is something else entirely, that there are many overweight women that are cute and attractive and sexy. Being overweight and sexy is not mutually exclusive. Being overweight and unhealthy probably is.
I live in Europe now, and wear an American size 8 - it is considered "XL" here. I think people here eat less processed foods, eat less in general and are more active. That thing about Marilyn Monroe being a size 14 is a myth - sizes have completely changed since the 50s! But check her out in "Some Like It Hot" - she is perhaps at her peak weight and drop dead sexy.

Before i had my baby i was size 12, and NOT fat. But now i am size 14, only one size bigger, and I am fat. Weird the way having a baby changes everything about your body.
I still struggle with eating disorders, at my smallest i was a size 8 (loose). My breastbone stuck out and you could have sliced bread with my collarbones. But now in order to look like i did at a size 12 i will probably have to make it down to an 8, with the way my body carries weight now.

First of all to whoever said Texas women are bigger, I'd have to disagree. All of my friends are cute Texas girls and all pretty small. I live in Houston and I am a 2 or a 26 depending on the sizes (sometimes a 3 at some stores). My BMI is 19, being 5'6 and 120 lbs I'd like to think I look really normal. They should put girls with my BMI on the catwalk because my bones don't stick out, I am athletic and just normal... nothing gross or sickly.

Don't you have hips or boobs or anything that distinguishes you from a 12 year old? Maybe muscles? I have known people with eating disorders and it is NEVER healthy to take laxatives and starve yourself. It is healthy to eat about 1500 calories a day of a balanced diet and exercise. I'm not trying to be rude, but seriously it sounds like you could be killing yourself.

It's hard for me to believe Marilyn Monroe was that large of a women because she looked fit and proportioned... I think that is key.
On a side note... when I was pregnant I gained 60 lbs and ate everything. I was 175, 9 months pregnant and wore a size 12-14. I guess that is why it is so hard for me to believe that most people think a 12-14 is not overweight. I mean maybe it is what the average American women wears, but that does not mean that it isn't overweight. I would guess the average American is overweight by more than 20 lbs.

Dress sizes in the 1950s were completely different than the sizes of today. My mother, who wears a size zero, is a lover of vintage clothing. She has bought many dresses that were made in the 50s, and the ones she has are a size 8. I am not at all in favor of sickly thin models with exposed bones, I am all for bringing back Christie Brinkley and Cindy Crawford sized models. Not too thin, healthy, and a size that is attainable for most women.

BTW I agree with most who say that Jean Paul-Gaultier was just being sarcastic and that models should be at a healthy weight i.e. Not underweitht and NOT overweight.

I say instead of banning thin models we should go deeper than that. If we didn't buy into it, the industry would have to find a new image to try and seduce us. The CONSUMERS need to get smart & stop buying the fashion magazines that all promote uber-skinniness among their pages. No magazine purchasers/subscribers = advertisers pulling dollars = less magazines printed = less concern of fashion & beauty = more active HEALTHY people concerned about DOING someting instead of LOOKING at or looking like something.
And lastly, fuck the fashion industry AND Hollywood. They work for US, not the other way around. WE pay their paychecks when we purchase their products, read their advertisements, go to the movies, concerts and the like.
