Its hard to "be just that" when you are constantly having to prove yourself to others. Ex: Today during a directors meeting, there was an exercise in going aroud the room to know some personal information about my peers. The #1 question was single or married? Like always my response initially is to say single, because I'm not married. However, what came out my mouth was not married but committed / partnered and flashed the ring.
Some were confused. some asked further questions and honestly I felt good. I can't live for these people! If they choose to judge so be it, I just know that I have to be comfortable in my own skin.
So needless to say I will be the topic around the water cooler for the next couple of days, but I can go to sleep tonight like the mighty lion I need to be.

When I moved to the DC area, I still had some hair growing out these old folicles. When looking for a new barber I remembered a buddy going to a shop down on H St. NE. It was a pretty young, busy shop, with some cute patrons and barbers, movies playing and radio blaring. I walked up and down H St. trying to find it but could not.
Instead, I found a small, uncrowded shop owned and operated by black men well in their late 50's, early 60's. I went inside, tired of searching and sat down. These men obviously had been working there for years. There was so much history there, from the old signs from the 60's to the barber chairs to the architecture of the shop.
I made this my new shop. It was wonderful listening to these men tell funny stories, talk about people in the neighborhood, current events and so forth. Each barber had his own distinct character and style.
I was sad when my shop closed down. And when my hair stopped growing.
