Gravatar " But Kimberly Fairchild, 29, an assistant professor of psychology at Manhattan College in New York, says catcalling can take a larger emotional toll than many women realize."

Yeah, catcalls are like the Women's Holocaust. Every woman who has been catcalled should contact the nearest HRC, and any woman who hasn't been, should take a good look in the mirror, if it isn't already cracked.

Gravatar I am so glad that universities are spending their time working on such significant research. All of society will surely benefit by this thesis.

Gravatar This is Holly Kearl and don't mind me if I come off as defensive but I don't understand the blatant hate and rudeness directed at people you don't know. you haven't read my thesis - CNN focused on a very small portion of it - and you don't seem to know what it's like to deal with street harassment. In no way am I saying this is the worst thing ever. I've volunteered at domestic violence shelters for years and currently volunteer with a national rape crisis hotline. however, i know from experience and from my research that street harassment can also be serious when it's manifested as sexually explicit comments, groping, stalking and assault. i don't think any woman appreciates or deserves that. please don't discount the problems people deal with just because you haven't experienced them and don't understand them. your blog entry is evidence to me that my thesis is on a very important topic because there doesn't seem to be an understanding of the seriousness and severity of the issue. people just seem to think about the stereotype of construction workers whistling at women (very benign if annoying and disrespectful of women as anything other than sex object) and not what that means or how it makes women feel or how bad street harassment can get
