One the one hand, ugh for trivializing cancer and the incredibly rough treatment of cancer.

On the other hand, YIKES. That is some SERIOUS body hatred there. I'm appalled that THAT kind of attitude and self hatred are considered by many to be more healthy than being fat.

Gravatar Just in case you might be tempted to go visit the original posting at Gawker, make sure you've stocked up on Sanity Watcher points. Ugh.

Gravatar Seriously I read that and said,
What the hell? About six times or so.

No seriously, SERIOUSLY. Are you serious?

That is the other thing I said.

Wow.

There are good reasons I cannot read Gawker.

Gravatar You know, I really have to wonder how people who consider their own bodies such deadly enemies manage in the world.

I really have to pity this person.

Best of all, I doubt there's a reaction that would upset her more.

Gravatar *facepalm*

Honestly. Some people say the dumbest things. Apart from the whole fat hate issue the way this person throws around the word cancer like its nothing is incredibly offensive, and troubling.

Gravatar I pity her too, Twistie. I saw a couple before pictures and I don't even SEE "extra" weight on her - how that could be interpreted as being as good as "death" is beyond my comprehension.

As to watching every piece of food and drink you ever take 24/7 and constant vigorous exercise, that sounds like something disordered to me. But then I like to eat when I'm hungry and I'm not training for triathlons either. Sigh.

Gravatar FWIW it looks like she's apologized again for the comment, which was supposed to only refer to lifestyle. She claims once again that she did "beat a disease and beat it well."

What disease? You mean being fat? I just looked up disease, and the definition doesn't apply to fat. None of them do. But that's what this society tells us - the doctors, the "experts" and everyone else.

Gravatar As offensive as it is, I understand the thinking behind the comment. When I was on WW, and had come close to my "goal weight" (I hate that term) I felt the exact same way. The difference is that I decided that watching every piece of food and drink that goes in my mouth and keeping up a vigorous cardio and strength training regimen might as well be death. Living was learning to accept who I was, while enjoying eating and drinking and moving my body for FUN, not out of a sense of desperate necessity.

I have a lot of sympathy for the writer, honestly. It's a sad place to be. I hope that she sees the light!

Gravatar Hi Sara,

I hope you're beginning to feel better and to see some light at the end of the tunnel. I was sorry to hear about the infection setback, and as much as I like to see you engaged on your blog, I know, from family members, how overwhelming any surgery can be, and I say rest, my dear, rest. Watch movies and indulge your whims. You have been through a lot and you deserve recuperation. That being said, morialekafa had a bit to say on women's issues so I thought you might be interested.... He actually isn't such a chauvinist, but I leave that open to opinion....

Gravatar Thanks for sharing this.

Gawker again redefines for me just how deep the well of shallow really is. If it weren't for their gadget site (gizmodo, engadget... at least I THINK there's a gawker-run gadget-geek site), their idea of media seems to be People magazine.

But the comments were a fun sideline. Commenters' gradually refining jokes, the mock-self-important comparisons between flooded bathtubs and Katrina and the likes had me chuckling. I also added a new word to my lexicon: Dumbutante. Then I went to Brill's blog (she's getting a real pasting for this, and has *very superficially* apologized). But I LOL'd at what were (at the moment) the last two comments. One congratulated her, saying Ms Brill's critics were just jealous and uncultured, and the other was a leet-speek one-liner that called Ms. Brill a cancer and wished she'd die, 'for realz.' Wicked funny juxtapos.

Oh, and take care. Post-op, even 'minor' infections are serious stuff.
