Exact opposite here in Wisconsin. We're getting cuts statewide for prosecutors. Not sure about PD's, but it is indeed a crappy situation.
i left the PD system due to overwork.. I was parttime and had over 100 open files,mostly felonies. I cannot say I feel too bad for you with 25 open felony files. Maybe they want to eliminate the statewide PD system and revert back to a panel system?
I spend 1/5 of my time in arraignment calendars - misdemeanor arraingments, domestic arraignments, serious felony arraignments, and property/drug arraignments. I don't expect "pity" for my felony caseload, but that is not all that I have (as I am sure you can understand).
But, 100 open felonies is definitely bad. There is no way to adequately represent people when you have that many open cases. One thing that made Minnesota great is that getting a PD was as good as getting a private attorney. And that's the way it should be. The poor shouldn't be denied good representation simply because they're poor. And I definitely don't want to be a second-class attorney. And I won't be. Which means I'll be working longer and later to do what I need to do to get the job done.
But, I doubt the law will be changed to return to a panel method instead of a statewide system.
That's what upsets me most. The opportunity costs of the budget. They slashed essential government services to fund ballparks last year, and this year trains and polar bears. Makes me feel like a conservative.
