They'll never get my business.
Should I find myself passing through Minneapolis I will make it a point to avoid Otho. A restaurant that will ignore that kind of misbehavior does not deserve to thrive. What a bummer of a way to have to end an evening.
As a bartender, I've had unpleasant situations occur with many guests. It would never occur to me to spew a racial slur out of my mouth -- if I did that, I would be fired, and justly so.
I have no idea why the bartender is still there, but it doesn't bode well for the future of the place.
I had the exact opposite experience once, shortly after 9/11.
We went to this usually crowded bar on an off-night, so there were 3-4 people there. We knew the bartender well and the manager somewhat well. Me and 2 female friends were sitting at the bar, drinking, when this white guy, sitting a few seats away started talking to us. He asked me where I was from and then got up and walked behind me, put his arms around my neck and asked me for my passport. I laughed (I was actually quite amused).
My friends started yelling at him and he went and sat back down.
shortly thereafter the manager came by and asked my friends if I was troubling them and asked ME to move. They quickly explained that I was not the problem and that the other guy was. Turns out, he was a bouncer there, on his off-night.
By this time, he had walked outside to smoke a cigarette. Our bartender friend showed up and we explained the situation to him. Promptly the manager and the bartender walked outside and fired the guy. On the spot.
The funny thing is, I'm not even of Arab descent.
Can you complain to the BBB or something?
Interesting. Sounds like a pretty creepy place. I googled the bar and found a few things interesting:
First, it describes itself as a "Pan-Asian Concept" restaurant. Strange that a place that embraces pan-Asianism would also embrace racism.
But then I saw this:
"Your food is prepared in an open kitchen and served by our superior, friendly wait staff."
Superior wait staff? That place must have Hitler Youth knocking down the door with their resumes.
