Talk Back to Scholar Here... Civil discourse required, but we value clarity over agreement.

MinnBEST encourages Scholar the Owl and Edwatch to publish their numbers of signatures and allow public view of who is signing.
The ABC Petition is @

clucking
It is a very public statement.
Also there is a petition to Fire the Architect of NCLB, Rod Paige @
http://www.firepaige.org/petition.asp
MinnBEST encourages all who are upset by NCLB's unwarranted intrusion of the federal government in out daily lives to sign this petition.
We must reassert our state sovereignty and take back our schools.
Thanks

Unlike some of the petitions I've viewed, Scholar the Owl's actually seems like a valid one. He asks for names AND addresses - and thus the petition can be verified. I hope that MNEDReform does not publish the petition to their website. Otherwise, a lot of personal information would be disclosed.

How can you call a petition "valid" when you haven't even seen it? At least Yecke's opponents are not hiding their petition behind the privacy of the Internet.

Because some people actually read the laws about how to create valid petitions. And some people actually view the structure of a petition if the care enough to click on the icon that allows them to do so.
When creating a petition, the state's concern in validity is not that the petition be available for public view but that the petition be verifiable. To be verifiable a petition must have at least a name and address.
Why are you concerned that the process be open to the public anyways. Do you support Kelley’s alternative draft created by “nameless faces” behind closed doors? If you do, you have no basis to argue for an open process.

You are missing the point of the petition. It exists to give a people an idea of the groundswell. Do you think the Senators are actually going to read the names and have their staff verify them?
I have no stance on the standards. I'll leave that to the experts.

I am having trouble finding the law that contains the requirements for valid petitions. Can you direct me to the appropriate Minnesota statute?
