The Nazis truly had the flair for the dramatic, from their Nuremberg rallies to their propaganda films. The Olympic Flame was no exception. They even produced a documentary of the Berlin Olympics and called it "The Triumph of The Will".
You're right in that it would be interesting to see what the Chinese would come up with, especially with their rising place in the world today.

I think the opening ceremonies of this year's Olympics will be one of the best. I have seen what the Chinese can do with their acrobats, synchronized dancing and gymnastics. and I'm sure they'll utilize all of these skills to wow all of us.

I am not excited with the Beijing Olympics for environmental reasons that will haunt their country for years. My apologies if I douse cold water on your fiery enthusiasm. Why? A lot of reasons. Though it may seem OA that I am affected when in fact I don't even live there, I think my reasons are sane enough. For me that is. Here is why:

Or you can try New York Times and read its articles about the Olympics.

I like the Olympics for what it is, the celebration of sports, nothing more, though I know there are countless political and non-political issues that surround the Olympics these days, I try not to dwell on these and let it affect my enthusiasm about the event.
