That's freaking awesome! My husband is a state trooper and has worked many DUI accidents. It's funny how the driver is shocked they still get a fine when they're hurt in the hospital and their car is wrecked...idiots!

I really hope many more governments will follow Italy's example because these irresponsible idiots need to be stopped.

The biggest problem we have a lack of proper training for the LEA's (Law Enforcement Agencies. A few years back Colorado stated using specially trained Officers for DUI enforcement and training. These Drug Recognition Officers were very good at what they did. The benefit was that they also provided training for other local officers. AS the training improved the conviction record improved because Officers quite making mistakes, and the cases quite being plea bargained or dismissed.
I grew up driving a wrecker for my Father, and then spent time as a cop, and then bought my own wrecker service. I have seen first hand the results of DUI accidents, more often than I care to remember.
But I agree, if they faced loosing their vehicle they might think twice about drinking and driving.

Why didn't anybody think of this before? Or did they think this was too harsh? I don't know how to do it but I think more governments should be informed about this new law so that they can adopt too.

Obviously, it won't work for some countries, especially here in the Philippines, simply because of our pathetic and corrupted bureaucracy.

That goes without saying. No law has been effective in our beloved but misguided country.

Yeah, every government should do like this. Sometimes, accident caused by drunk man may affect other people also.

Actually, it's one of the scariest scenarios on the streets. No one is safe from a drunk driver no matter how careful one is. There are many cases here where even an innocent bystander or a vendor was killed by a drunk driver. Once case happened just the other day.

Interesting article about Italy's moves to thwart drunk driving. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if anyone caught driving drunk got life in prison. Not that I'm advocating this, necessarily, I just think it would immediately put an end to the problem almost entirely.

That may be too harsh. But then again, maybe that's what's needed.
