Thank you, thank you, thank you. And even more thanks for the terminology: "companion planting".
Armed with all this information, I'll have a better year next spring and summer.

I'm hoping to do a container garden on my back deck. That is if they ever finish fixing it. I remember the marigold trick. I hear mint works as well as bayleaves for border repellents.

I just ordered the book, along with "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible." I already own the Square Foot book, and "The Central Texas Gardener." (Which I need to find; it's, well, somewhere, in my house.) Thanks for the recommendation.

To add a bit to what MF put out...
Basically if you got a box, a chunk of sun and some good soil - you got a place to grow some goodies.
I had to move from a nice house with a perfect yard into a small apt. just as I was about to plant about eight dozen starts into a 10x10 raised bed garden earlier this year.
I gave away the starts to my neighbor who planted some, gave away the others. He told me nearly all of them grew to maturity and gave up great veggies. He was especially proud of the tomatoes. He plans on growing the same strain next year. He also got an introduction to kohlrabi. It's now a favorite.
My sun access isn't the best but I may have enough to grow a tomato or two this next year. I'll do some herbs of course (no, not that kind!) but they'll have to be shady ones or go indoors under a light.
This is doable, people. It's not factory farming. What MF suggests isn't rocket science nor is it memorizing 'War and Peace'. These are things we can all do and for just a wee little bit of scratch. (can you think of a better investment?)
Setting aside the real prospect of economic collapse, the other benefits of emergency preparedness and self reliance will remake us into free thinking, independent people, the kind that built this nation not a mass of mindless drones moving about according to the machinations of the corporate gamesters.

I made a copy of this for my daughter and have ordered one of the books for Christmas for her.
I am not able to garden anymore, so have to do it all through my daughter. Wish I knew how to post a picture here so you all could see her cauliflower and broccoli heads she grew last summer....just beautiful and BIG too. Lots of good eating there for us.
Thank you so much MF for doing this for us....although, I already have a lot of your past postings already printed and into a loose leaf book. Who needs to buy books when we have Monkeyfister!!!!
