Actually the container homes are not a bad idea. You can buy a used one out here for about $1500. They are easy to cut windows in them and when they are insulated they're very energy efficient. But at the price they are asking I think not. You're paying 100 to 190 K for something worth maybe 50.
A guy out here made his home by welding two together. He used these because he lived in a remote area and the containers were fairly easy to move to the site. He had the whole thing up in a couple of days.

And each of them come with their own particular scent! Pickles... shoes... car parts... drugs...
Actually this sounds like a very clever idea, but expensive to heat and cool I betcha.

I would guess that insulation would mitigate the heating/cooling challenge.

Well, here in Iraq, that's what we live in. I'm living in a third of a container, wrapped up pretty with some tin on the outside. I've lived in worse, except for the latrines being 100 yards away.
