MF....thank you...thank you...for that address....
I was so in hopes that you could get us a local name and address so that we could help out with something other than a few 'prayers'...not that those won't be coming also, but right now they need something tangible and am just so glad that I can help a little bit on a personal level.
A check will go out in tomorrows mail.

I'm trying to steer my few readers this way, though I expect you'll get more traffic from Shakesville. Good work.

I suppose this is going to be churlish, but weren't these the people who laughed at the California wildfires?
Who were outraged by 9/11 as an attack on America but when pressed were pleased that it was New Yorkers that got taken down?
Who blamed the victims of New Orleans for their own misfortune?
Who elected Bush and stood by his destruction of FEMA?
Supported his 'faith based' initiatives?
Played Red State/Blue State hardball?
Who supported Grover Norquist and Mike Huckabee?
Well, if that's the case, then I'm sorry for the tragedy and disaster that's fallen into their lives. I'm as sympathetic as I am for the victims of 9/11, Katrina, the Wildfires, Fallujah and a dozen other things. Regardless of our views, there is a common humanity that obligates us to reach out and give aid in times of need, even to those who would not do the same.
That said, I can't but wonder how long it will be before these people go back to being assholes, and laughing at other peoples misfortune.
Flame away, but you know its true.

You can go to any Red Cross chapter and make a donation earmarked for the storms. This will relieve the local chapter from the administrative tasks while they do the direct service disaster response.

The Salvation Army usually does a great job with direct, on-the-ground feeding, sheltering and support of relief orgs. I can't find a donation line... they might encourage you to donate through your local chapter.

Hey Skeptic,
What you say may be true, but we should help anyway. Progressives step up and provide real assistance, conservative blowhards spew worthless talk about their moral superiority.
I wonder if neil (nazi) boortz will have the same disdain for these heartland people he shows for the Gulf Coast Katrina refugees.

Hey, Skeptic - tell me how you know the politics of these folks. There are lots of blue people in red states. I'm in Kentucky myself, and fortunately only lost a couple of trees and some shingles to these horrible storms. Thank goodness my kids are safe and we didn't have any significant damage to our house. Way to judge an entire region; good job. Glad we're on the same side.

Consider yourself linked on both my birding and political blogs (for what it's worth), and I'll mention the comments above noting that we can donate to our local Red Cross and earmark it for TN.
And Skeptic, while I agree that all those things may be true about the repubs in TN and the south, I'd like to think we progressives can rise above and maybe teach those repubs a little about compassion.

... and they will happily take your money and put it in their general fund.
The American Red Cross does not honor earmarks
ARC is corrupt and politicized. I went to Biloxi, Mississippi, after Katrina for a month of volunteer work. Red Cross workers had almost as bad a reputation as FEMA officials. Only the Red Cross could make an act of compassion sound like a traffic stop. Typical joke as a Red Cross ERV approached: "Somebody hand me my Uzi."

The Red Cross most certainly honors earmarks. This is why they publicly announce when they have all of the money they need for a particular relief operation. This is also why the Red Cross is having trouble funding it's national headquarters operation, and it's day-to-day disaster relief, since the general fund gets none of the earmarked money. After the disaster is well over, the Red Cross will go back into the community to raise money for both the local chapter and for the general fund. This has been true since slightly after 9/11.
For Katrina the Red Cross was dealing with an operation about 20 times the size of any previous operation, and yes, there were problems associated with that. I had to deal with some of them as part of the management team in a large shelter in Baton Rouge, and later in Biloxi doing another job. Far from perfect, but a hell of a job none the less.

Sorry I took so long to pick up on this one, but I have you up at my place, now. I won't post for a few days so that it stays at the top of my blog for a while. If even one of my dozens of readers clicks on the link and donates, it'll be worth it.
Again, sorry for being late, but then again, I did link you without being asked, so that's worth something, right?
Also, glad to hear you're safe after all of that. I, like most people, was detached and distracted. No excuses. And thanks for doing this. Bravo Zulu.
