The Freelancers Union plans are absolute Pieces of Shit. I'm fleeing.
I found their definition of indie to be way more questionable than anything else - the Velvet Underground? Brian Eno? Nick Drake? Sure, I -guess- you could make a loose argument for that...but they didn't even bother to define their own criteria. I mean, if you include those guys, then where are the Stooges? Television? Patti Smith? But I digress...
Diversity is kind of a necessity for these lists, so it's just easier to assume that Pavement's listing at #1 should include their other albums by default and so forth. If you look at it as a listing of "The 100 Best Indie -BANDS- of All-Time", then the list looks somewhat better.
It's more likely that they just fudged up their list ever so slightly to create discussion and arguments among their fanbase, so fuck Blender Magazine and fuck their stupid list. I refuse to be told what to think!
Good point, Jeremy. Although I question that diversity aspect. If you're doing that, then don't call it 100 Greatest Indie Albums Ever. Call it 100 Great Indie Albums by the Best Indie Bands, and don't even rank it. And why include two Pavement albums, if you're going for diversity? Dumb. And that The Queen Is Dead isn't on here -- or Closer, or Doolittle -- makes the list stupid. BUT I'VE BEEN TITILLATED, SO THEY GOT ME.
