On the topic of Waveland, nothing made me happier lately than the Daily Show's offensive against CNBC, because it showed that, despite my sense that the media-industrial complex is pretty much committed to the same pro-corporate message, there are still some sources out there, like Dora and Boots, who are willing to buck that trend.
Sure, the halcylon era portrayed in "Good Night and Good Luck" or the imaginary ideal of "Network" -- not going to happen anymore. The Sunday shows still trend Republican, and the same Bush-era narratives reign supreme (isn't having Tucker Carlson comment on John Stewart's partisanship a little like giving John McCain a platform to explain why Obama's policies are out of sync with...? oh, wait, they do that, too). But at least we have our little "grass mud horse" realm of free speech in the alternate reality called comedy.
All this kind of makes me grateful for all those years where conservatives would make sexist or racists statements and defend themselves by saying "what? don't you have a sense of humor?" That has bought us another decade of free speech as long as we pretend it is all about having "a sense of humor."
Hope we figure out something in the interim.

disclaimer: I avoid Waveland as much as possible, so probably am not current with the Mad About Madoff storyline. BUT my sense of the story is the same as the Who Did Abu Ghraib and the Fibbing Martha Stewart storylines. Some messy mass of outrageous corruption stinks so bad we can no longer ignore it. What to do? Some conveniently low to mid ranking individual must be chosen to assume full responsibility and be publicly flogged.
It being the nature of Waveland's vérité fausse to endlessly dwell on the simple story of one character, who the audience already recognizes. (Introducing and characterizing dozens, maybe hundreds, of characters and trying to explain all the facts is hard and BORING. And the target demographic would be going, "like, whateever! Somebody bring me the remote.") And, it being the nature of humans to throw somebody else under the bus. This particular plotline is probably going to be around quite a while.
