A few months ago, Wilco taped a set for Chicago PBS's revived "Soundstage" series. I'm basically a Wilco novice, most familiar with the MERMAID AVENUE sessions, which I love, but even those songs have tended to seem charmless, at a Farm Aid gig from several years back, for inst.Wasn't that thrilled by FOXTROT or earlier stuff taped for me by friends. But, even though this was in longshot, so that I was always conscious of the distance between stage and audience, it really worked! Largely due to the contributions of a guy seated at keybs with guitar in lap (since departed), but also Tweedy was a good front man, frali but brave, and a good ensemble, even if they were all temps, for all I know (or all they knew). Much better than co-billed Sonic Youth, who were verry awkward.
