i wish that i had gone to this. i agree with rockwell in some ways, because as xgau would say, being a music writer is being a writer first, but see kyle gann's blog for a really good post about how different the expectations of both editors and audiences are for pop/rock/hip hop writing and classical coverage. did anyone at that thing talk about being 'music literate,' a player or at least nominally versed in music theory? that was a big thing when i was studying classical music criticism, and i still don't know how i stand on the issue.

I walked in at the end of that discussion. Meredith Monk was on the panel. I think, well, fine if that's what you're bringing to the table, but it doean't mean you have to bring it. Look at two music writers we know---Douglas Wolk and Amy Phillips. Douglas is a musician and at times his writing comes from a technical perspective. Great. Amy is not a musician. Her writing never comes from a technical perspective, but her grasp of the larger issues surrounding music kicks ass. Both good music critics. But different.
