Let me say this in favor of Other Passengers: the drummer was my intern at Ye Olde Alt Weekly and he was awesome. He let us shave Best of Portland into his chest hair and he allowed us to drop him off on the coast of Oregon with no money just to write a story about how he got back. I convinced him that he might benefit from letting his Puerto Rican half shine through and for a while he added his mother's Hispanic surname to his already outrageouly Italian last name and it was so silly it was great. For these reasons alone, Other Passengers is more angular than the others.

The whole Akron/Family thing I can't get my head around. Maybe if they came from South Dakota. But they moved to BROOKLYN... to lock themselves into an apartment and act like Grizzly Adams?

So many goddamned hippies in Brookyln. That's why I moved. To, um, a different part of Brookyln, but still, there are far less hippies there now.

I bet if you told people in Brooklyn 15 years ago that there would be loads of 20 something hippie types in their borough, they would've laughed at you.

i think the brooklyn hipster population significantly outnumbers the brooklyn hippie population, though.

And what about hipsters who dress like hippies? Like Devandra Banhart, new weird, beards, etc.

Wow. made it through one Akron/family song and it garnered them that much vitriol? Get past the appearance. Listen to the music. To compare with frat/DMB or to say they're "riding a wave" is naive. I've known this cats for a bit and they've stayed true to their sound. Which is fantastic. I wonder if when people first saw rashaan roland kirk they thought, "enough with this free-form multi-instrumental bullshit already. stop riding Miles' wave." A few bands break in and all the bands that were doing it before them get shit for following a trend. WTF???

i have no problem with bands biting other bands or riding waves or whatever. and i don't care whether akron/family are super nice guys or not. all i know is that the one really long song i suffered through was really bad and left me with no desire to suffer though more.

amy, amy, amy. i thank you for your critique but wish that you wouldn't have made such a personal attack out of it...
it just doesn't sound anything but mean.
not that you need to make a puff-piece
out of everything, or that you have any
obligation what-so-ever to listen to more than one song..as a member of the
group i just wish that you could have givin me a little more to work with than just venomous fuck-all..whatever.
i suppose i will regret posting this.
because i am opening myself up to more scathing commentary.

Dirty Projectors have to take the distinct place in my heart of being the worst live band I have ever seen (and I've seen some pretty awful bands). Maybe they had an off-night when I saw them, but that doesn't excuse their rudeness after (or before) the show.

other passengers was painful to listen to. I would agree that they're angular if by angular you mean "hurts your ears as if they were being stabbed by angular knives." the energy and the occasional nice rhythm and the singer being incredibly hot did not make up for the endless feedbacky outros that lasted 5 minutes. the drummer does sound like he's pretty awesome, though.
