I agree about the amount of cooks, to some extent. When the tour was originally announced, the Faint was mentioned as Oberst's backing band. I thought that might be interesting. But with 10 folks up there, no one -- in the audience or on stage -- seemed to know where the focus was supposed to be. A mess.
But at times I thought the whole thing would be better if everyone stayed and Conor left.
The next night I saw Andrew Bird at Southpaw, and with only one supporting player he put on a much more elaborately layered show. Synthesis vs. nonsense.
I think I'm the only person who kinda liked this show. After seeing Conor do his acoustic thing a bunch of times it was refreshing to see something different. Call it the shock of the new. And I don't hate Digital Ash, so there's that. Nicky Zinner also kill't the Rabbit Hole solo in that Maps-y way of his. As someone who's not that familiar with the Faint, I thought they were enjoyable but repetitive as all get out. I just stole my grandma's phrase dictionary. But yeah, Faint guitarist does very little guitaring and lots of lanky swaying: fun!
I can imagine the live show was a mess, I'd just like to speak up for Digital Ash (I've kept like seven songs from it). I kind of need some powerful music to offset Conor's voice, to provide context: The bombast of Desaparecidos, some gargantuan orchestra of sycophants or a lot of glitches, blips and drum machines are kind of crucial if you can't buy his shtick wholesale. Wide Awake was just waaay too 'pay attention to Conor, only Conor' for me.
i guess i buy his shtick wholesale then. but i can see your point, anthony. something about digital ash just doesn't click for me. it makes me want to listen to the postal service.
but then again, pretty much anything makes me want to listen to the postal service.
