Gravatar Awe-some. I was super unimpressed by the Tribeca Grand show, but I loved the album. Glad I didn't go last night.

It's sad to discover that one of your favorite albums was completely created by a "studio artist" (one who sounds good on vinyl, but crap live).....

Gravatar We were sitting in the back and noticed the one fixture that had the "RESTROOM" sign on one side and a japanese character on the bottom. I can only assume it meant "poop."

We left at midnight, before she went on. Good to know I made the right decision. When did she actually hit the stage?

Gravatar i think she didn't go on until like 12:15 or 12:30. totally not worth the 2 hours we waited!

uh, why? it's an album; of course it was created in the studio. whether the artist is any good live is irrelevant to whether the record is any good.

Gravatar word, matos. the chicago show was all right, but she just stayed inside the dj booth the whole time, so it didn't really feel like i was watching a live performance. also, it was kind of short. but the dj afterwards was pretty good!

Gravatar Although a shit live show doesn't take away from a great album, it does take away from an overall impression of an artist. It's a plain fact that Annie would be more likeable / interesting / respectable if she had a stellar show AND a killer record. The live lip-synching doesn't make the album worse but it is / should / can (be) a little sad.

Gravatar I maintain that the Tribeca Grand show with the live band was a pretty good set in spite of some wobbliness. I don't know if I really trust the people who dis that show, because they are folks liable to overrate really lousy/bland indie bands.

Gravatar are you sure that was for guide vocals and not just a vocal monitor?

Gravatar (hiro's drink prices are also totally offensive -- $8 for a beer!)

Gravatar I think whatever I was drinking was 7.

Gravatar You guys are like the Statler and Waldorf of the indie scene. Awesome!

Gravatar Statler and Waldorf! That's like the highest compliment EVER. Amy, don't move away. Don't.

Gravatar In three months, not much has changed with Annie's show I am sorry to report. She still needs a stylist, a stage presence and a singing voice. The electric cow bells were a nice touch in the one highlight "Come Together," but maybe that says more about me than it does about working towards a tighter performance. Oh well, I met her after the show. She's was talking about all her DJ work and the different crowds she's seen on this tour. The fact is that she's out on a limb. If the bough breaks, you see a shit show but you kind respect her more for it. She is obviously doing things on her own and, need one mention, has crafted the most perfect record I can think of lately.

Gravatar Gotta agree with you that not everybody has to take music forward, but I have to say I hate the way you use the word pop.
M.I.A. is not pop music, at least certainly not in Kala. The track in which her pop sensibility was more obvious was in Paper Planes, of course, but being a pop artist is another matter.
Pop were and are Backstreet Boys, Paramore, 30 Seconds to Mars, all that shit.
M.I.A., Yelle, Annie and Robyn are artists with pop sensibility, which is a totally different matter.
