Ehrenreich is correct, I'm afraid. She doesn't say that PR people *always* lie, she says we are *sometimes* called upon to disguise the truth -- such as finding the five nice words in an otherwise savage review and highlighting those five words in an ad.
More to the point, in my recent PR adventures on behalf of Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans, I find that CEOs take action, and PR people try to put the best spin on the CEOs action, even if that action is inaction. Lines like "we are cooperating in relief efforts to the fullest extent possible" could only come from a PR pro, and they're usually code for "I don't know exactly what we're doing but I'm sure we're doing something." Saying the latter would be more honest.
