Gravatar I am highly uncomfortable with a post written by a white woman generalizing about Latin cultures as being more jealous/expressing more jealousy/taking it more seriously. For one, I think you need to examine your generalizations. Couching them in disclaimers doesn't equal not generalizing. It's just not a good idea for a member of a privileged group to go around generalizing about and entire [sociall constructed] group of marginalized people.

And do I really need to point out that Mexican/=Puerto Rican/=Cuban/=Panamanian, etc.? Because let me tell you, amongst all my Latina friends? We all differ quite significantly. And I find your generalizations to be useless, uninformed, and reifying of the racist hegemonic stereotpes that people of color constantly face.

I realize you are trying to make a point, but to use Latinos as a literary device is insulting. At best.

Gravatar You are right. I should not have used the term "latino". I am specifically referring to the Mexican community. That was my mistake. But it's important to note that it is not the Mexican-American nor the Mexican community living in the United States. It is the Mexican community living in Mexico. Which is an entirely different thing.

Now do you really find my "generalizations" to be that "useless"? When they cause you to feel such frustration and annoyance by them? I think my ignorance can be used as a really great learning point. I think jealousy is a socially learned characteristic. It's a natural instinct nurtured by what we see, learn, and feel in personal experiences. That's my perspective. And based on that, it is a fact that jealousy will differ between cultures. More specifically, between countries. That is where I made the connection between a Canadian living in a latin country, an American living in a latin country, and a Mexican living in a latin country.

You do realize I can't make myself un-white, right? And that I can only see these things through white eyes? And that I in no way attempt to pretend that this isn't the case or that I can begin to speak on behalf of any other group, individual, or identity other than a white female? Then again, I find that you are 100% sure I am white an interesting aspect of your conclusions.

I react to what I see and what I live. Does it mean I'm right? Nope. It means that's the way I saw it and reacted to it. This is not a disclaimer. It's a fact. I write about gender in Mexico. Not because I'm an expert, but because I can. I apologize if you felt offended by my semantic usage. I do not apologize for putting it out there. But call me out on it. Gender and race will always be personal. Maybe you're right though. Maybe the time has come for the white female to stop blabbing about her opinion on gender in Mexico. I've been considering that fact for a while. Although I'm not quite sure the use of such blatant sarcasm and disrespect is necessary in a comment. But like I said, it's just my opinion.
