You can try using Jon's heater if you want. That would prove once and for all if it's your heater or your room that's at fault.

I wan't thinking about my heater at that stage. I was thinking about those pops and lights flashes we get every now and again. And the buzzing at light switches when you turn them on. And stuff like that. Apart from the fact that my heater melted itself I still stand by it.

would be the wiring then, if its a old house then the landlord to get them checked. its there duty to provide the house for rent in good conditions.
get the electrician or someone and send the bill to the landlord and the report, depending wats written on the contract.
dont forget to read the fine print.
