One of my very favorite films.
Before it's DVD release, I'd seen 'Even Dwarfs Started Small' several times over the years at different art-house theaters in the SF bay area.
The first time was at The Roxie, in San Francisco's Mission district. A Herzog-savvy friend took me, and just as the lights went down, he quickly explained that this film may test our friendship - - "So, just in case, it's been nice knowing you."
Eventually it would be my turn to give the same warning to unitiated friends at later screenings at The Red Vic on Haight Street, the fondly remembered York Theater way out on 24th Street, and the old U.C. Theater in Berkeley.
Fortunately I discovered that I'd chosen my friends well.
I did come to find that when attending the rare screenings of the film, it was best to sit near the back of the theater. That way in addition to watching the movie, you could enjoy the moments that would drive other patrons to walk out. It never failed.
There'd be the early departures, usually couples on a date, likely having had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Then during certain other key scenes - - the dead pig, the scab-eating, maybe - - you'd see people popping up and leaving like the 'eject' button for their seat had been pressed. The exodus during the crucified monkey scene was usually good for a chuckle from the remaining audience.
Check out the movie if you get a chance, and it's been nice knowing you.

This is the most amazing movie I have ever seen!
Werner Herzog is a THE genius is film, but I can't explain why.
The dwarfs are so funny, so evil, so mad!
ULTIMATE PIECE OF ART
