Excellent post. Good recap on comparing DPN and "CDPN". Worth the reading if anybody asks me.

I agree. The public at large will have a hard time fathoming on what this whole big deal is about. A deaf president has been chosen...what's the big deal they'll say. This is a totally different world these protesters are getting themselves in.

Somehow, I get the feeling that this won't garner much, if any, national attention. There's no effigy to burn the likeness of a hearing president that would generate massive sympathy for the repressed deaf students. In fact, this whole thing might backfire on them if they're not careful. We're in the blogging age now. National attention may come quicker and end sooner and fizzle into a wimpering and silent bang.

People should ignore McConnell's comments because he blasted DPN itself.

Even though I was critical of DPN, I also stressed time and time again in my blogs that DPN was a necessary event that had my support. Please get your head out of the hole by twisting my words time and time again.

Awright, awright!! YOU, stay over in that corner *there*-- and YOU, yeah YOU, get over in *that* corner there. That's the end of Round 1!

I know you guys feed off each other, and I think you both secretly love the attention, but save the dustup for somewhere else, eh?

EXCELLENT post! It's nice to see a voice of reason in the Deaf blogsphere

I get a gold star, yay!

You made some very valid (and mature) points. Hopefully the protesting students will read your post, wise up and get to the REAL work that has to be done to make the changes that they want for Gallaudet.

Actually, old roomie, I made the first comment here and yet I was forced again, once more, to defend my position about what I said about DPN in my 2nd comment. It's not the feeding off, which I do *NOT* enjoy (please be careful where you go with this one), it's more like fending off his libels and accusations all the time.

Anyway, I get two gold stars for reading Mr. Sandman's blog twice.

Good posting! I just wanted to answer your question of whether Laurene Simms applied. Answer: it was mentioned some time ago that yes, she did, and she was among the 15 of the deaf applicants screened out and rejected.

Gravatar The students, under the guidance of alumni and faculty members, are planning the strategies. It will be OK eventually, it takes the time to dismantle the audistic mentality and be away with it.

Gravatar I think your comments probably reflect the "silent majority" of Gallaudet alumni.

If I recall, the alumni supported DPN (with some notable exceptions). The same level of involvement isn't there today. Is it a reflection of our better-informed deaf community, or perhaps the death of our deaf clubs have rendered the firebrands impotent, or perhaps more realistically, the alumni doesn't care because we're too busy with prosaic concerns like work, family, etc. and the University has failed to maintain its connection to the alumni in a meaningful way (except during fundraising efforts)?

If you want to fault IKJ on anything, this is probably the one: that alumni donation rates (already significantly low), have fallen to 7.2% for 2004. The national average for colleges and universities across the US was 21.2% in the same year.

During Gallaudet's Capital Campaign, only 15% of alumni donated while other private liberal arts colleges donate 33%.

So is it the administration's fault for alienating the alumni or are other factors at play here? I personally don't donate to the University because the only time I hear from them is when they need money.

Gravatar I blame the employment sector for keeping the deaf underpaid and unemployed. That in turn contributed to the lower donation rates. Duhhhhh!

Gravatar Well, I'm not Deaf but I'd like to comment if that's ok. I think DPN did an awesome thing and I think I.King Jordan has been and will always be remembered as a great leader. Today is a different time and I don't know if the students of this time have the guts to stand tall and push like the students of the DPN time. I hope they do and I hope they let there words be seen and heard.
I agree that employers do not promote Deaf employees like they should. I have Deaf Clients and Deaf Friends that complain about that all the time.
By the way I enjoyed all the posts...

Gravatar Jeez. What's a guy to do? I go on vacation, and the comments pile up! To be fair, this has turned into the topic of the decade...

Kristi, didn't realize Laurene Simms *had* applied. Now I'm even more puzzled. She was someone I could see as the next president.

McDuhhhhhvitt! *grin* Yeah, I agree with you-- my only real contacts from Gallaudet (other than the alumni newsletters and Gallaudet Today) come when they try to hit me up for money. If my degree garnered me a paying job, I'd consider it. As it is, their entreaties for donations go straight to recycling. Perhaps that should be a goal in this protest-- renewed and better ties between all groups?

Vicki, no problem with chiming in! I welcome all views. Glad you enjoy my posts, and hope you stick around!
