Oh God! No way for IKJ to continue as Prexy until we find another one! He's done enough damage to Gallaudet and to the Deaf Community. Kick him out without his retirement benefits as what happened to Kitty Fischer, librarian at MSSD.
Let's pray good folks run Gally from now on!

So what do you suggest? Running him out as well?
Considering his annual salary and benefits over the last 18 years, I don't think Jordan is going to necessarily hurt if his retirement benefits are yanked. He's financially comfortable, from what I understand (think about it-- free housing for 18 years, etc.). That said, I think it's time to move on, whether Jordan's here for just two months more or until mid-2007. Jordan's not part of the equation anymore-- but the rest of us are, and we need to start thinking about how to proceed from here.

The protest is not over! One of two demands are met. 1) Jane Resigns; 2) No reprisals. The trouble caused to have the Board of Trustees realizing Jane was not the right candidate should not be imposed on students, faculty, staff and alumni. In good gesture, the Board should agree with #2. It was how I King Jordan became president as well.
If reprisals are at the discretion of the President, will 82% of the faculty be punished or fired? Will 83% of the MSSD and Kendall School be punished? Will many departments including those that found the administration lying and practicing faulty governing be punished? Mistakes occurred from the top starting with I Kig Jordan controlling documents intended for the candidate selection process, and the Board of Trustees for granting favors to the President and Jane Fernandes.
Cleaning up Tent City is not needed unless a second stage of Tent City will need to be brought into place if the reprisals are harsh.

You wrote: "...Gallaudet can be what it should be: an educational beacon." I wish to contradict with you in saying that Gallaudet university is now a beacon of intellectual life. It is the institution of higher learning and teacher.
The Laurent Clerc National Center needs to have its own separate entity and be changed to the Laurent Clerc National Academy to comply with federal mandatories for demonstration schools.
The term "center" is likened to some centers such as day care center, adult care center, and clinic center, which is very patronizing as well as misleading. These school principals and teachers are not glorified babysitters; they are the school faculty.
We are ready for change!

In addition, Gallaudet's policy is to expell students arrested for protesting. Does that mean 10% of the study body should be expelled? Along with them a number of students will voluntarily withdraw. Realistically this will not occur unless the adminstration wants to take extreme measures at any cost! Genocide plan?
We all know while arrests were made at one gate, 4 other gates were blocked, and a number of protesters were considering to participate in the blockage.

Vizz;
The "No-Reprisals" demand was dropped by the FSSA long ago.
I believe it's already been made clear by several board members that students who were simply protesting would get community service while those who damaged university property (ie: idiot who broke a window at college hall) may face stiffer penalties.

Well written. I also have enjoyed your previous coverage of the protest, summarizing and grading the events that have led to this point.
I'm glad the protest happened; It brought out the pink elephant in the open. Now that the protest is over, the pink elephant need to stay out in the open; The issues fueling the protest are still there and need to be addressed one way or another.

Irving Jordan is now a lame duck and done with. He has not contributed any productive or constructive dialogue throughout the crisis. Patterns indicate he is "over the hill". Time to put him to green pastures.

Hi all! From the top down:
Vizzilli, as Neil pointed out, I don't think the BoT plans vindictive reprisals (at least I hope not!). I think they are trying to assert some control, but at the same time, show some leniency. I don't think they're stupid enough to do anything retaliatory simply for "revenge" or other reasons. I must say that your statements such as "82% of the faculty" facing reprisals stems from your emotions right now, and not from logical thinking. The BoT won't be stupid enough to destroy or close the university (which is what would happen if those who voted no-confidence were dismissed).
Carl, while I too hold Gallaudet in a special place in my heart as you do, I am also realistic enough to know that academic standards at Gallaudet are not what they should be. Gallaudet is a university, yes, but I think it has yet to maximize its potential of what it could be. The PART report is just one indication of that.
You're right Neil-- you left before I could tell you (and then you told me anyway), but Elisa noted on her blog that it looks like the BoT have agreed that penalties will be commensurate, and not extreme. We'll have to see how it plays out.
Todd-- thanks- I agree, the overarching issues will now need to be dealt with. Stage one was the immediate removal of Fernandes; stage two is determining how best to replace Jordan, Fernandes, et al, and ensuring that previous and new mandates are effective at dealing with issues such as racism, audism, ASL usage, etc.
As for whether Jordan should stay or leave, Alumnus and Observer, I hope that the board will choose an interim president (my preferred option in the next post I did), and let Jordan leave in December as originally planned. I think that would be the best for all concerned.
